For those of you torn between NYU and a lower-ranked school with more money, what are your goals? Where do you want to practice?

Well paying job. Motivated to live anywhere.lawschool22 wrote:For those of you torn between NYU and a lower-ranked school with more money, what are your goals? Where do you want to practice?
The 20s school would put me ~70k in debt (living expenses) while NYU is closer to, what, 250k? I've never worked with that kind of money.

I'm bumping this because I'm still wondering why no one will call me back and if I'm alone in it..politics89 wrote:I emailed financial aid with a question last week, and then called today to leave a message and still have heard nothing back. Anyone else having problems hearing back?

NYC Biglawl. Which seems very possible from some of the lower t14s provided you're above median. Especially if you have solid prior work explawschool22 wrote:For those of you torn between NYU and a lower-ranked school with more money, what are your goals? Where do you want to practice?

Yep, definitely true. It's that whole "assuming you're above median" thing that makes me worry about some of the lower T14. But if I wanted NYC biglaw I would probably be comfortable going to a lower t14 provided the money was right. Unfortunately I want DC, preferably federal government, but I would also do DC biglaw. This makes going to a T6 more appealing to me, and, assuming I don't get HLS, I think NYU is probably best for PI/Gov't in DC.paglababa wrote:NYC Biglawl. True. Did you apply for any of the NYU named schollys? If you get H, is it going to be a no brainer for you?lawschool22 wrote:Yep, definitely true. Re: NYU Class of 2017
I didn't apply for any of the NYU scholarships. The two that interested me were the RTK and the Furman. The problem w/ RTK is I didn't want to be locked into PI, as I may still go biglaw, and for the Furman Public Policy scholarship I honestly didn't think I had anything at all in my background at this point that would demonstrate a commitment to publicly policy, etc., and really didn't think I had a shot. So in the interest of getting an application in early, I decided not to apply to any of those.paglababa wrote:True. Did you apply for any of the NYU named schollys? With that said, if I did get H it probably would be a no-brainer, barring an unusual amount of money from NYU (but I don't see that happening).

That was my big reservation as well, especially since PI has all sorts of challenges that require having certain goals in mind a long the way.lawschool22 wrote:The problem w/ RTK is I didn't want to be locked into PI, as I may still go biglaw
I'm hoping to get my Need Access stuff in soon, already have one parent, the other is being difficult

Re: NYU Class of 2017
Interesting to see everyone's reasoning. NYU is my top choice, I'm committed to PI and as was mentioned a few posts ago, I just don't see any school CCN on down that can compete with NYU's public interest offerings. I did apply for the RTK and the Furman Policy schollys. I guess we'll know about interviews in 2-3 weeks. But I'd be happy going to UMich because COA is way lower and their environmental law program is very strong.

I know some IILJ emails went out, but is the general thinking they are still going out? Or am I SOL?

Re: NYU Class of 2017
Not sure about IILJ specifically, but based on last year's thread, invites for named schollys were going out as late as March 15th. I'd say that until around then, you're still in the running. Some people have reported getting IILJ invites a few pages back on this thread though.yomisterd wrote:I know some IILJ emails went out, but is the general thinking they are still going out? If you applied for a named scholarship and you get the e-mail about your merit aid decision being made before getting an interview invite, I think it automatically means you're no longer under consideration.

Re: NYU Class of 2017
I don't have any financial aid offers yet, but I'm torn primarily between NYU and UVA, but there are some other attractive options. I want to do environmental law either in NY or DC, but I also want to have options going forward in the unlikely event I change my mind. Either way racking up significant debt is not going to be helpful, and COL in Charlottesville is way lower. But NYU's PI offerings are pretty phenomenal, both generally and specifically for environmental law. I'm also having a hard time turning down the overall prestige of Chicago, so there's that.lawschool22 wrote:For those of you torn between NYU and a lower-ranked school with more money, what are your goals? Basically I have no idea where I want to go yet, and I'm hoping financial aid offers help me sort it out.

I submitted need access on the 1st of February and my financial aid status told me that my application was "under final review." Looked like that was the last step before getting an offer. Hopefully soon!Come on Down wrote:Has anyone submitted Need Access and gotten an aid offer yet?

DISCLAIMER: these are only people explicitly saying they got the scholly, including 2-3 profiles that really fit that description. I didn't include any AnBryce winners.mylifeis24 wrote:oooh would like this toonothingtosee wrote:IS there a link somewhere to the numbers if recent RTK recipients?
NYU's list of scholars has 25 profiles that list latin/PBK/other honors that indicate really high GPAs.
