I looked through the ASWebpage and couldn't find anything about this. I would be a little surprised if they don't though, since NYU has such fantastic outreach and at least one of their peer schools gives you info to stay with current students at their ASW.

Hi everyone! Just got in today and have been looking at all the previous posts. The advice about applying for merit aid only sounds really good, but does anyone know what kind of stats you would need for it to benefit you?

Re: NYU Class of 2017
It's not about stats, its about whether or not you would receive need based aid, or if your family is so well off that alerting the adcoms to that might actually hurt your chances of merit aid.yarrow wrote:Hi everyone! Keep in mind there is no scientific evidence to this - purely anecdotal. And I'm the only person ITT who has been talking about this lol. So take it w/ a gigantic grain of salt.

I emailed financial aid with a question last week, and then called today to leave a message and still have heard nothing back. Anyone else having problems hearing back?

Re: NYU Class of 2017
Sorry I have to add to this as a UChicago alum but the area is not really as unsafe as people claim it to be. The law school is on the southern end of the campus, which used to be the more 'dangerous' area where students are more likely to get mugged, especially during initiation season. Even though, you had to go pretty at least 4-5 blocks before it gets sketchy, but really there's no reason for that. The school's also adding some major institutions at the southern border, including two really nice undergrad dorms and the new shiny arts center. Add to that the fact that Hyde Park is becoming pretty commercialized so I really wouldn't worry too much if danger is something of a concern. That and I've walked home at 4am (sometimes after a late night study, sometimes drunk) and was fine in the end... But really the only truly unfortunate thing about the neighborhood is that the 'quirkier' businesses are slowly disappearing and that it takes long to get to the other neighborhoods without a car.midwest17 wrote:This is way, way overstated (though there are plenty of people in Chicago who think this way). Anyone who's spent any amount of time in Hyde Park will have a much more realistic view of the safety, both of the campus and the surrounding areas.cway wrote:Not to totally derail this thread, but I spent a summer at UChicago and actually found the campus quite beautiful. The problem is that if you venture beyond the campus borders, you're in the (actual) murder capital. I wanted to go look at the law school and my friends in Chicago wouldn't even go with me unless we took a car... Great school, unfortunate location. HTH!milkandcheerios wrote:oh I agree that the conversations were definitely hit or miss. Some of the older alums were kinda hard to talk to and they weren't trying very hard to "sell" NYU but I had some great convos with the younger more recent graduates. I'm also not the greatest at small talk so that's probably why it was a little awkward for me.
The dean this seem to insinuate that Chicago has a really ugly campus. I really want to see this for myself now because chicago would definitely top my list if i got accepted.
haha well thanks for the question! I'm glad people asked about NYU's "weaknesses" and I really liked the deans answers although I still feel like he rambled a lot
That being said, I am excited to have gotten the call today for NYU

Anyone else receive an outreach email today from a Board of Trustees member congratulating you and inviting you to meet up in person at ASW?

Congrats to all the new admits. I'm curious, is NYU currently your first choice? Why or why not?

Not necessary my first choice but that's only because my first choice is a 3 min block from my parent's apartment. Definitely up there though especially considering I miss being in NYC

Also, maybe I'm being silly, but it seems like the RSVP to admitted students weekend is broken. Anyone find a work-around?

Re: NYU Class of 2017
It is for me, but that doesn't mean I'm set on it yet. NYU is THE school for public interest out of the CCN tier, which is where I'm at. Neither Chicago nor Columbia offer the support, faculty and opportunities to enter the government and public interest sector. I love Columbia's ivy status and the doors that can open, but I've found that Columbia excels in firms and corporate law, not as much government and PI. Chicago is fantastic as well, and has the reputation of an academic powerhouse, but their pull in NY and DC is less than NYU's.lawschool22 wrote:Congrats to all the new admits. I applied for the Root-Tilden-Kern scholarship for PI- If by some miracle I get accepted to that program, the choice would be a no-brainer. Otherwise, despite my love for NYU, it is only an inch above Chicago and Columbia in my personal preferences, and visiting the schools/scholarship offers are going to be the deciding factors for me.

I'm torn on NYU. I have a full tuition scholarship to a 20s school but I am expecting nothing from NYU.
Can't decide.

I'm with you on almost all of this. The only thing I don't know if I buy is that Columbia being an ivy is good for anything special, other than lay preftige.mylifeis24 wrote:It is for me, but that doesn't mean I'm set on it yet. I am in a similar boat here. Waiting to see what I'm offered and to attend ASWs before deciding.SFrost wrote:I'm torn on NYU. I have a full tuition scholarship to a 20s school but I am expecting nothing from NYU.

For those who submitted their Need Access form already, did you wait until you got your tax returns back or submit with 2012 information and update to 2013 later? I'm not expecting mine back until early- to mid-march, but I'd like to receive financial aid information as soon as possible.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
