Re: Georgetown Class of 2017
It sounds like you will! Firm receptions are business casual and think conservative for women. I'm no women's clothing expert, but you will definitely need a proper women's business suit, but skirts and blouses or conservative dresses could also be appropriate.schmooky wrote:Hi, thanks for taking questions! I'm sure this makes me seem like a completely neurotic 0L (well, I am), but you mentioned that firm receptions are rather formal. Do you happen to know what women typically where? My current job is pretty casual (think jeans + blazer), so I may need to go shopping...
Right on brother, happy to have you around. You'll definitely meet me at the reception. PM me if you have any questions or would like specifics on veteran's services et al at GULC.TheSpanishMain wrote:Hey, I'm an Iraq vet. No worries at all. There's a ton of info to absorb, and the initial few months of law school (and the build-up prior to) are definitely a fire-hose!JustHawkin wrote:Thanks for hanging around to answer questions Bfalcon! It's nice to have an upper class representative
If anyone has any questions about curriculum or the specific sections, do let me know. I wasn't section 3, but many of my closest friend last year were in it, so I'm quite familiar with the program and its setup/teaching style/workload/exam base.

Any specific 1L professors that are infamous? Any that we should be pumped to have?

I've heard a number of things about Abernathy already... ranging from "his course should be required for all 1L's" to stuff like "dude is terrifying". Now I kinda hope I get himJustHawkin wrote:Any specific 1L professors that are infamous? Any that we should be pumped to have?

I would rather it be one of you.

Bringing up the email issue again. My parents made the unfortunate mistake of naming me in such a way that my initials spell men. Right now my email address is men##@. Does anyone have any updates on whether we can change this? Not thrilled.

Doesn't seem likely, but there's a possibility you may be able to talk someone into it.

https://sites.google.com/a/georgetown.e ... ounts/faqsCan I change my NetID?
NetIDs are only changed in the small number of cases where a typographical error in the spelling of a person's name has occurred or the NetID spells an offensive word. Changing a NetID requires a great deal of coordination, effort, and care to ensure that a person's access is not unduly interrupted and that the change is properly reflected through all systems which use NetIDs.
At this time, it is not possible to select your own NetID or to use a personal alias as an alternative email address.

Thanks, falcon. I'm also a vet and will be in the part-time program. Not sure if I'll be able to make the vet reception, but I look forward to meeting.

Ugh, that's frustrating. My name is a weird way that it is difficult to connect my net ID to who I am. Might try and ask if I can get it slightly altered.uncreative wrote:Doesn't seem likely, but there's a possibility you may be able to talk someone into it.

Did anyone notice Dean Cornblatt's recent email said something about 550 students? If so, it looks like class size went down by about 100, which would be good news for us. (LST says last year's class was 645.)

Yea, every time I start to daydream and think that a little above median should still have a decent shot at biglaw, I am rudely shaken out of it when I remember that there will be ~100 transfers with killer grades.

They do, but firms at EIW will be looking at their grades from their 1L school.cactusflower wrote:I thought transfers GPAs start over at their new school? Re: Georgetown Class of 2017
Makes complete sense and is pretty scary that there will be 100 people coming in with near straight A's. But aren't transfers at somewhat of a disadvantage? It would seem not, but I see a good amount of people on TLS telling others not to transfer because they'll have a hard time at EIW.BmoreOrLess wrote:They do, but firms at EIW will be looking at their grades from their 1L school.cactusflower wrote:I thought transfers GPAs start over at their new school? Re: Georgetown Class of 2017
Yea, it's probably all going to depend on how selective GULC is with transfers. If it's all dudes that are something like top 5% at Maryland/GW/W&M type schools, I think it will be a pretty big concern because they're going to be more attractive to firms than a slightly above median GULC bro (and probably a top 1/3 bro). But if they're taking top 25% from American/Catholic/University of Baltimore type places, I don't think it's as big of a concern.
Just based on the sheer numbers of transfers each year, you have to imagine they aren't too selective. At least a healthy chunk is probably from the later group.

Re: Georgetown Class of 2017
I was just starting to fill out some of my loan documents and was looking at the 2014-2015 CoA that is published here:
http://apps.law.georgetown.edu/admitted ... penses.pdf
I noticed that the total of all of the expenses that they list is more than the $79800 total CoA listed by almost $5k (total of all of the expenses is about $84k). Has anybody spoken to the Financial Aid office about this or know what the discrepancy is?
