My ultimate goal is a federal clerkship before entering the private sector. Biglaw is definitely an option, but I would like to have a greater degree of choice as to the firm for which I work (I really want to end up in CA).

I know how tough this choice can be. You've got to do some soul searching (quickly). Feel free to PM me if you want to hear my thought process at all, but you honestly can't make the wrong decision here. I will say it seems like you were/are much more set on HLS than I was. All I can say is go with your gut! You don't want the next 3 years to be full of "what ifs" in either direction.
Best of luck

That's amazing. I know you have a tough decision to make, but I don't really think there's a wrong one.

Did you get any money from Harvard? It would be helpful comparing the two as well.

gah this is the gist of what I got as well but through email. Unfortunately I have a deadline this friday for a substantial scholarship at a lower T14 that doesn't allow multiple deposits so I have no idea what to do. Penn became my number one choice after ASW, but dealing with their financial aid office has been the absolute worst experience. To the point where I'm starting to reconsider Penn.

Thanks, guys. I haven't received need aid from Harvard yet, but my own and my parents' contributions should be negligible (0 EFC on FAFSA), so I hope to get a fair grant.

Well assuming you get a sizable grant from Harvard, since you are trying to get a clerkship, I would probably lean towards Harvard. If you are extreeeeeeemely debt averse, though, UPenn it is.

Didn't receive merit aid by this past Monday, so I sent an e-mail. They replied by saying I was in consideration for a scholarship, and I was notified of their decision (a positive one) on Tuesday. PM for deets.

It's looking very likely! I thought I had my mind made up, but this came out of far left field. Seems like too good an opportunity to pass up.

Just saw your choosing post. Naturally I'm a bit biased, but Penn definitely seems like the right financial choice for you. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions about the campus etc. I noticed you didn't get a chance to visit.

I emailed Penn and let them know I couldn't commit so quickly. After considering my own feelings on the subject and consulting with my fiancé and others close to me, I really feel like I would always wonder about what would have happened at Harvard if I were to turn it down for Penn. Harvard really is a dream come true for me, and I think it ideally suits my career interests; plus I feel like it leaves the door open for a larger variety of career options if I discover a niche I truly love while in school. For me, finding a career and working in a place that clicks with me (ideally CA) matters more than money alone.

Sounds like you're making the right decision for yourself. Congrats on Harvard; I live in Cambridge now, and it is a great place to spend three years.
