I have and paid the $240. I was informed that the larger amount ($165 I think?) was refundable, but not the remainder. I just wanted in early so I could get things settled early.Mullens wrote:Has anyone applied to live at McClurg Court and also went on the Student Space housing during ASW? Did you have to pay the $240.00 just to apply or was part of this fee supposed to be waived. I went on the tour and filled out one of those postcards but lost the materials and wanted to double check before paying $240.00. I was in contact with Tyler at StudentSpace but he just forwarded me to someone at McClurg Court who hasn't been very helpful and just told me to apply on the website.

They already have plans to revamp the library. They're removing 1/3 of the books and making more study areas and reducing those stand-alone shelf things.

While some portions of the library are a bit dated, I think the pictures are a little unfair as to the condition of the library. Show us the lake view pictures on the top floor! Breathtaking.Pishee77 wrote:They need to upgrade that library..

The construction info on the site only mentions some added rooms and a circulation/reference desk overhaul. Glad to hear those particle board shelves may be getting some attention. What about the cubes?Micdiddy wrote:They already have plans to revamp the library. They're removing 1/3 of the books and making more study areas and reducing those stand-alone shelf things.
Thanks for the photos! Does anyone use that chess set?rinkrat19 wrote:Couple of pictures of the main study area on the first floor of the library that I just took. 2nd floor is pretty much the same. Long row of large tables against the lake side windows, long row of carrells against the south side windows, warm sunny corner with soft chairs/sofas. There are more tables over on the north side of the first floor, and lots more carrells on all three floors, along interior walls. The third floor of the library has a smaller study area with a few smaller tables. As you can imagine, it gets more crowded towards finals, but while you may not get your favorite study spot every time, I've never not been able to find a spot, even if it's just a carrell away from the windows.d cooper wrote:I haven't seen any good shots of the library. There are some online of the staircase, but it doesn't really give a good sense of the space. I've been in the atrium for the interview, but I didn't have a lot of time to explore the campus due to travel.
This doesn't really factor into my decision either way — just interested in seeing more of the campus.

I'll play with you. It'll be a nice break from studying.

I've never seen anyone using that chess set, but IIRC there's another one on the low shelves on the first floor of the library, where there's usually a game in progress with a card left behind saying which color's turn is next. I assume anyone can take a turn.

Believe it or not, someone actually asked that same question about the chess set on our ASW tour! They said no...haha. I think we need to get some students using it though. I would play too!rinkrat19 wrote:Couple of pictures of the main study area on the first floor of the library that I just took. 2nd floor is pretty much the same. idk about the chess set in the library but at least one of my section mates plays chess with crazy russian people on the boards off the lakeshore trail. so there's always that too.

I can't find it on the website. Is there only one deposit? I can understand that, because it's definitely expensive enough as it is.cotiger wrote:Anyone know when Northwestern's second deposit is due?

Any second rounders get a scholarship decision today? The email said April 14-18, right?
Eta: nvm just got it... Wonder if they are being less generous than with the first round

I don't mean to be cynical, and I'm not saying your advice is wrong either, but schools doubtlessly offer more scholarship money that they actually have available fully aware of the fact that X number of students won't accept. So just because you, and surely others, withdrew recently and left money on the table doesn't necessarily mean that they haven't exhausted their funds.W$RKliveWELL wrote:keep negotiating guys they have money. Honestly...you don't give a shit about what the library looks like when you're in there studying for hours at a time. Could it be sleeker, more modern? Sure. But you get over it...real fast. I'm not staring at the chairs or the shelves or the ceiling when I'm in there. Besides, the lake is there and that's what you should be looking at if not a book.

Has anyone had any luck increasing his/her scholarship offer? Can you share your initial offer and by how much NU increased it? Feel free to PM me if you don't want to share it publicly.

Re: Northwestern Class of 2017
Let me be more specific. Keep negotiating because I was in a similar position where initially I started with a decent offer from NW but through negotiation got them to raise it twice. My advice was speaking to that and the money left on the table by those withdrawing. Just trying to be encouraging to everyone still in itHitchensian wrote:I don't mean to be cynical, and I'm not saying your advice is wrong either, but schools doubtlessly offer more scholarship money that they actually have available fully aware of the fact that X number of students won't accept. If anyone is withdrawing without at least negotiating once, you're making a mistake (and arguably twice). They expect negotiation. There is every reason to suspect (from a strategy perspective) that they give less then their in case the person does not negotiate and just accepts.

do you think we could negotiate for more money for ourselves in exchange for not telling 0Ls to negotiate?Micdiddy wrote:If anyone is withdrawing without at least negotiating once, you're making a mistake (and arguably twice). But really!! I know that aesthetics should not play a big part in your decision, but after seeing Berkeley's new reading room...I think Northwestern should upgrade. Especially those florescent lights.herrowww wrote:I say we nominate the library for extreme makeover.Pishee77 wrote:They need to upgrade that library..
