Re: Chicago Law Class of 2017
I have figured this out for you, random admit. You should take the 151 bus down to Michigan and Washington. You can get off and walk one block to State street and take the 6 line to 60th street. Get off and you are on the same street as the law school.
The school advises people not to take the green line. So even if you are alert and shit like wheninlaw suggests I wouldn't want that to be my first impression of the school and Hyde Park. Especially since even if you survive the green line, it still leaves you with the 63rd to 60th walk that, by wheninlaw's ridiculous war zone standards, is shady.

When I looked back at google maps I noticed that even google had a warning about the route being potentially unsuitable for walking lol. That, plus fun with google street view, dissuaded me from adventures on the green line on this particular weekend. Granted I just moved from a sketchy AF neighborhood in dc where I always had mace and one of those hidden travel wallets handy after dark! Thanks again.

Does the school seriously advise people not to take the green line?Mal Reynolds wrote:I have figured this out for you, random admit. You should take the 151 bus down to Michigan and Washington. Did any one else get an email yesterday that said that they wouldn't be able to consider your scholarship appeal until April 15?
I'm hoping that's because they want to give me a Ruby

I mean, I've lived in Chicago almost my entire life and the Green Line is universally thought of as a bad idea by Chicago residents. I just don't see any reason to take it over the Red Line, esp w/the new Red Line improvements the Red Line is actually much faster, plus its pretty easy to just catch the 55 bus over to Hyde Park from the Garfield station.WheninLaw wrote:Does the school seriously advise people not to take the green line?Mal Reynolds wrote:I have figured this out for you, random admit. That being said, during daylight hours I think the Green Line and walking to/from it are fine, but it really just depends how comfortable you are with the city.

Go to the regents pregame first. Regents is giving you guys free alcohol and you can meet up with other 0Ls. Not weird either way though.c0llegeStUd3nt wrote:anyone think it's awkward going to bar review thursday night knowing no one, or will this not be weird?

What's ridiculous is that, after admitting to having not walked around Chicago, you're telling a life-long resident what to think about the city. He didn't even say it was scary and terrible and dangerous, he just said it's a bad idea relative to the other options, and it is.cotiger wrote:The Cottage Grove station is literally two blocks from campus. 63rd is three blocks. You'll almost certainly be fine; the reason not to take the Green Line during the day is because it sucks, not because it's particularly dangerous. At night it's also probably fine, until the time it isn't. If you've been mugged and liked it, go for it. If not, considering Metra is faster and almost as close and Red Line+bus is about as fast and just as close, why bother? Bravado?
The walk from Garfield is sketchy as fuck. "Oh but it's just across a park." That park looks like a DMZ. Again, on any individual walk you'ld figure to be verbally harassed at worst, but if you do it often enough (or if you're on your phone looking at a map all confused because you're doing it for the first time and don't know where you are) it's going to end badly.

I'm sorry, you're right, that was presumptuous. I guess it's just difficult for me to fathom because I've never lived in a place where you have to be fearful walking two blocks, or where it's actually sound advice to avoid a subway line altogether. My frame of reference is Manhattanites calling crappy parts of Brooklyn sketchy and dangerous, when really they're just run-down and contain lower-class brown people. Considering Chicago's crime stats, there's a very high chance that it really is different. I'm think I'm so resistant to thinking like that because it sucks to have those considerations constrain what you can do.hdunlop wrote:What's ridiculous is that, after admitting to having not walked around Chicago, you're telling a life-long resident what to think about the city. Re: Chicago Law Class of 2017
I'm in DC now and hear the same sort of thing all the time. "Oh it's so sketchy," by which people mean there are bars on the windows. I guess in my own parlance "sketchy" and "dangerous" are two different things, the former being like "don't wave your phone around or walk around super drunk" and the latter being "avoid." When I hear interns be like OMG such-and-such is sooo sketchy it makes me shake my head, particularly considering some of those areas actually were five years ago.cotiger wrote:I'm sorry, you're right, that was presumptuous. I don't think of Chicago as being a dangerous city at all but there are parts that are. I can't classify with great confidence either 63rd or Garfield but I can say that the former seemed to me more like what you're talking about in Brooklyn and I'm talking about in DC -- stay sharp, basically, and avoid at night until you know what you're doing -- and the latter seemed more like wow I'm glad I'm driving instead of walking by these groups of kids wearing matching clothes staring angrily.
The good news is that whole park seriously looked like a DMZ so it doesn't constrain you from many options you'ld otherwise be rushing to embrace. There was a comfort food restaurant down on 63rd that looked fantastic though.

Trivia was great - thanks for the tip Mal! I think that I also may have met a TLSer or two (among both the 0Ls and 1Ls), but I'm not positive.
