it's awesome to hear that the people at CLS have been great - i'm thrilled and excited to meet my classmates! i had lunch with a friend of mine who's a 1L at CLS, and she mentioned jose olivo. that's absurd / creepy - did you know him personally?lunaraeon wrote: Best has been everyone else at CLS. With rare exceptions, every single person is friendly and intelligent and I get to say hi to lots of people every day which is nice. Worst was finding out Jose Olivo deceived us.
thanks for being here, 1Ls

Re: Columbia Class of 2017
Hey Robert_Bert. I commuted to class from Jersey City - it was about 40 minutes on the train, 1xfer, 1 hour door to door each way. I'd say over half the student body lives close to campus. A good amount live a short commute (10-15 minutes, no xfers), and a few of us live very far away. (I guess in answering your question, I'm going to assume 'important' = academic success and social stuff)Robert_Bert wrote:Question for current CLS students: what percentage of 1Ls live close/on campus? Would you say living nearby is "important"? Trying to decide whether to move to Morningside or stay in my current apt in manhattan with about a 40 min commute to campus. Pretty torn. Thanks!
There are benefits. You're going to crush the square footage of any dorm room at your own apartment. I live with my SO and it's nice to be away from the city, and her commute is only about 10 minutes. It does feel nice to be far from the school when the atmosphere there starts getting crazy. You won't miss events you want to be at if you plan. Know something's at 8 p.m. and you get out of class at 4? Bring all the texts you need to be productive in the library until then. And weekends are all up to you. I chose to spend the weekends with my SO, whether in Jersey or NYC, but you can obviously spend them with other students.
Another thing I guess I should mention, I have a firm set of friends in NYC from my UG time here. If I was coming from elsewhere, being closer to the school would be more important since I'd know next to no-one. But as you're living here already, I don't imagine that's a problem for you. You can keep your old friends and make new LS friends without having to live on campus.
But there are real cons. Losing 2 hours a day gets annoying and reading on the train without a seat, crammed into rush hour nonsense, is not cool. Near finals, your commute time doesn't come out of reading time. It comes out of sleep time. Despite that, academic success is possible and the commute will not be the breaking element. Just use that time on the train positively. Read something, take a 40 minute break listening to music, etc.
Spontaneous stuff (aka the most fun stuff) you learn about by text or fb message about something happening/going out for drinks, you're going to get the message 30 minutes late when you get off the train 40 minutes away from school. I would say, even at 40 minutes, going back to the school a second time in one day will never happen. This may have helped my grade, tbh.
ITE, it's up to you and your taste.

RD applicant and international, and debt-averse, so not committed. But CLS can change that, if they want torunthetrap wrote:congratulations to all the new admits!!!! fiiiinally.

Re: Columbia Class of 2017
Congrats, new admits! I have a question that kind of piggybacks on BrianG's question earlier. Do your packet and the admitted students site give any further information on the admitted students days (such as travel reimbursement, lodging, etc.)? I know CLS used to give a travel stipend up to $250, but I can't find any additional information besides that. Also, I'm not trying to be impatient, but I'll most likely need to attend the March dates and need to start hashing out logistics very soon.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Checking in! My first acceptance of the cycle hooooooray! (I am also curious if anyone knows anything about the travel stipend for ASW.)
ETA: The info is on page 8 of the admitted student handbook.
