First lesson on the South - we all have different kinds of BBQ. It's fairly hard to find brisket in NC (that's more of a Texas thing) but don't worry, NC BBQ is delicious too!fiji wrote:I'm really excited to see the types of offers Duke is giving this year. Top 10, great clerkship placement, amazing weather, ridiculously cheap COL (and did you SEE the gorgeous housing options), and uhh really good southern food (I love ribs and brisket).... what's not to love. All I need is some $$$, please!

Yum. Vinegar-based Carolina style BBQ is the best. And yeah it's gonna be pork.Plainsman11011 wrote:First lesson on the South - we all have different kinds of BBQ. Brisket is delicious as well. I don't discriminate when it comes to BBQ hahaslackademic wrote:tbh I'm not that into the pork bbq, esp with the vinegar. Brisket>all, imo. I had a pretty bomb brisket sandwich from a food truck here the other day, though.
You don't have to worry about food here. If you're coming from NYC, L.A., etc. then you'll miss certain things, but there's a lot of good food in Durham.

Haha thanks for the beginner's southern BBQ lesson! I've never been to the South yet actually, so it's much needed. I love vinegar-based BBQ, so looks like I'm set regardless!lawschool22 wrote:Yum. Please direct any and all questions about BBQ to your Southern TLSers. In my experience, anyone who grows up in the south has been thoroughly educated in BBQ and has strong opinions on the subject matter...(like, Carolina BBQ>Texas BBQ, which is true)fiji wrote:Haha thanks for the beginner's southern BBQ lesson! Let's talk chicken and waffles for a minute. Is it Gladys Knight's chicken and waffles good? If so, I'm there.slackademic wrote:People have said this before on here but it's worth repeating: when you guys visit, make a reservation at Dame's. It's a chicken and waffles place and it is 180. You can also just show up, but it gets pretty crowded so call the day before or something.

Good to know there will be an adequate replacement for my beloved Roscoe's chicken and waffles.KatyMarie wrote:Let's talk chicken and waffles for a minute. I'll have to try it! And it's good to know that I'd still be in Waho wonderland if I attended Dukeslackademic wrote:I don't know man I've never had that but it is really really good. There are these flavored spreads and different cuts/waffle flavors. The chicken and/or waffle game in the Triangle is generally on point. Waffle Houses as far as the eye can see, as well, so you're never to far from a drunken 3 a.m. serving of smothered/covered/diced/whatever hash browns.KatyMarie wrote:Let's talk chicken and waffles for a minute. There's a place around here that just started serving Fried Chicken w/ Red Velvet Cake Waffles. I love the south so much sometimes.

Yes. I went to Duke undergrad, am a pescetarian but eat predominantly vegetarian, and I survivedfkt18 wrote:I'm a vegetarian... would I survive at Duke?

There's also always the option to get groceries, and there's a Whole Foods directly across from East Campus. You may not have tons of time to cook, but in a pinch, a ready-made vegetarian entree is available from the store.

Great, I'd heard the South wasn't exactly vegetarian-friendly so I'm happy that I won't starve. Thanks, fellow Hermione!jasper09 wrote:Yes. Some of the dining options have changed since I graduated, but if anything, I think they've improved. It's never been a problem any time I've been back to campus.

They're in the process of doing it now. Some have received theirs. Others had theirs go out yesterday (according to the status checker's mailings list). Many have yet to receive any word, but should in the next week or two.Pishee77 wrote:Has Duke given out scholarship offers yet?

Re: Duke Class of 2017
FWIW, I got my scholarship offer by e-mail on 3/13, the same day it was listed under 'mailings'. They sent a nice e-mail saying they wanted it to get to me faster than snail mail and attached a scanned version of the letter. I'm international, but Canadian. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Good Guy Duke..
