It's a fantastic experience. I'll never forget the first time I got to join in with the "It's Great To Be A Michigan Wolverine" chant after the first win of the season my freshman year (youtube it if you aren't familiar...or just spend a few hours watching youtube videos of the Michigan chants, cheers, and boos). Also, this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6RK-dCniHw It's as close to the feeling of the Big House that you can get off-season. I'm excited for you guys to experience it!anyriotgirl wrote:AceDeuces wrote:Well, I mean at Michigan sports are huge. Even if you don't like sports, at least go to a game or two at the Big House. Last year, my last in undergrad, I got in line for the IU basketball game at 4AM for a 6PM game. Not K-ville at Duke, but just to put it in perspective, my freshman year, they gave out free pizza to any student who stayed past halftime.anyriotgirl wrote: so how much am I going to have to learn to like sports?
BUT even if you don't like sports, the tailgating and pre-gaming atmosphere on home game Saturdays is unreal. The whole town is painted maize. It's indescribable. You just have to experience it. I had a number of friends who for one reason or another didn't go to the football games, but they still woke up at 6AM to pre-game. I'm sure the law school has it's own tailgate, though I admit I don't know where it is. The MBA program though has an insane tailgate that involves a bus that people dance on top of, so there's that.
However, Ann Arbor has so much going on. You really do not have to be a sports person at all to get lost in what the city has to offer. Plenty of people are not sports people and still love the city. If you find yourself for whatever reason in Ann Arbor over the summer (Summer Start perhaps?), the non-sports side of Ann Arbor is in full swing. Music, art, The Arb, whatever, there's tons of stuff. But I promise, even if you've never watched football before, you will love Michigan Football by the time you leave.
Thanks for such a great response! My undergrad had next to no sports culture, but I am a sucker for school spirit. I'm excited

Whatever, born and raised in Ohio and spent four years at OSU, not going to change my team just because I get some insults and beer thrown my way. Michigan may have a better law school, but they certainly don't have a better football team.
edit: And Iv'e been to Ann Arbor for a OSU v. Michigan game, and it's nowhere near as bad as being a Michigan fan in the Shoe

How many of you Darrow folks are seriously considering taking it? I feel like the Darrow vs. HLS/SLS decision is a relatively common one, and I'm curious which way people are leaning.
This question may be premature given that HLS/SLS haven't released financial aid info yet.

I'm almost positive I'm going to take it. PM me if you want detailed info as to why but the gist is that I think it is incredibly short sighted to leave so much money on the table.DrStudMuffin wrote:How many of you Darrow folks are seriously considering taking it? Maybe a silly question, but if I apply for need-based aid, will that be added on top of my merit scholarship? Or will they count the previously awarded merit money against any NB money?

What is the consensus re merit aid for people admitted after the end of January? Sit tight for two weeks before starting to worry?

I've done a lot of thinking about this, and the money only makes sense if you 100% want to do biglaw. Of course, you'll probably have to do biglaw for a few years to pay off the HSL/SLS debt, but for all other careers those two schools place much higher, so it's worth the price.DrStudMuffin wrote:How many of you Darrow folks are seriously considering taking it? but i do know of someone who got less money and their letter did not say that. So i think it depends on how much money they give you to start with. i.e. if you got $x or less, then you can apply for need aid, but if you got $x or more, then we are already giving you enough so you cant apply for anY more.

Let's start 10k per year as our over/under. Anyone get offered more than that and also not get the note that need aid is out? anyone get offered less and get the note that they aren't eligible for need based aid?

Just had someone confirm that $18K a year still left them eligible for need aid. Even if it's the max, that's pretty decent.alex.cm wrote:Let's start 10k per year as our over/under. Any $25K/year people who can weigh in?

I can confirm that at 22.5k/year, I was excluded from need-aid, so pretty sure above that you'll be excluded as well.
