Thanks for doing the legwork on this!webbdp3 wrote:Just got off the phone with their admissions office. For those who were wondering the Merit Scholar Awards have not yet been finalized and are awarded separately from your initial offer. The woman I spoke with said that the MSA should be awarded "shortly."

Excited to be heading to Nashville tomorrow afternoon! Will be driving from STL and getting in around 6:00pm or so with any luck. Is the reception even worth attending at that point or should I try to meet up with you all afterwards? I'm staying in the Scarritt-Bennett Center, and if anyone else is in a similar situation, send me a PM and we can meet up!

There was an email about a dinner at 8, definitely going to that. Then Bar Review is later.blink wrote:Excited to be heading to Nashville tomorrow afternoon! I'm staying there too. My SO was pretty upset when she found out what it is, but you can't beat that deal.blink wrote:Excited to be heading to Nashville tomorrow afternoon! I'll also be staying there. Flight is getting in late afternoon, so I probably won't be going to the reception.Will_McAvoy wrote:I'm staying there too. Submitted a request but haven't heard back yet. I just know their general policy is not to negotiate.El Principe wrote:I never asked, has anyone had any success negotiating scholarships with Vandy?

Yea they do no negotiate because they want to ensure equality and fairness in appropriating funds equitably to all qualified candidatesRobbin Blue wrote:Submitted a request but haven't heard back yet. I'll be headed up to Nashville this weekend. Any recommendations of what I should check out while I'm there?

Re: Vanderbilt Class of 2017!
I went for the first time this weekend and have nothing going on at work, so:KatyMarie wrote:I'll be headed up to Nashville this weekend. Any recommendations of what I should check out while I'm there?
I spent countless hours just wandering around downtown -- there's a ton to see. As to be expected, the main drag is a maybe a tad kitschy, but it's a lot of fun. The Capitol area is real neat, and the public library was really cool, too.
I tried out many of the midtown places. Tried to watch a game at Corner Pub, which I didn't really enjoy. Wouldn't go there again. The Row was really cool and also had great breakfast. Had a great time getting drinks on the deck at Soulshine, and there was a good band playing. Noshville was good. I enjoyed the pizza at Blackstone, and their beer is really good. (The sampler is an awesome deal). I actually got a six pack for the road, but was pretty disappointed -- it's way better on tap. Jackalope and Yazoo were the other local breweries I tried, and I liked everything.
I was pretty disappointed in The Gulch; it was pretty over-hyped in my opinion (though it was a small sample size). The Pub was cool and had an awesome beer list (Young's Double Chocolate Stout Nitro on tap? Yes, please.) but I'd have more fun going out in either downtown or midtown instead.
I tried to ask a lot of locals for stuff we should try to do, but nobody really had any substantive suggestions (other than the GOO, which I had zero interest in doing). The town is laid out very well and easy to explore on your own, I'd just spend a lot of time wandering, really. The vibe I get from campus is that I probably would have hated it as an undergrad, but it seems like it would be a nice place for grad/professional school.
All in all, it's a really neat place. I was concerned I'd feel out of place or uncomfortable as your standard lefty atheist Northerner, but that really wasn't the case. There was an opinion piece in a local paper titled "Carpetbagging Hipsters are Ruining Nashville!" After my visit, I'd be happy to join that movement, at least for a few years!

Thanks for the detailed response! I'll keep those places in mind

As a lefty atheist Southerner, I'm used to feeling out of place anyway, so that assessment is encouraging!

Re: Vanderbilt Class of 2017!
For some reason I had it in my head that breweries in the South wouldn't spend their time as much on Porters, Stouts and Scotch Ales -- probably because I associate them with the cold and blizzards and what not -- but I was very relieved to find that wasn't the case (although I didn't find any local Scotch Ales
).
Blackstone had a very commendable oatmeal stout going as their seasonal, but their porter (at least on draft) was great.
I'm typically not a big brown ale guy, but the Jackalobe Bear (or something like that) was really crisp and delightful, too. Granted I was pretty hungover and it was at like nine in the morning, it's pry worth a try.
Enjoy your trip!
