I love basketball (my favorite sport) so I'm not going to disagree.Fiero85 wrote:Now that sounds pretty cool. Even as a non soccer fan, I do like this. And also how they drop worst teams and promote best teams among upper and lower leagues sometimes, or so I've heard.ManoftheHour wrote:UEFA Champions League, dawg. It pits the best teams in the best leagues in the world (Premier League, La Liga, the Bundesliga, etc) against one another in one tournament. It's like the World Cup format with group stages first and then the playoff bracket. The finals is the most watched sporting event in the world.Fiero85 wrote: Don't know enough about Premier League or other professional soccer playoffs to comment (bores me to tears).
But I can't help but add: soccer might just be the biggest ad populum around. Fans love to point out that it is the most popular sport or is most watched. But soccer is popular for mostly socio-economic reasons (dirt cheap to play) and because of the relative simplicity of playing in a large group, not because of true sporting enlightenment. There are better sports out there for sure.

I love Tennis.
<rant>
It may not have a "playoff" but the fact that one bad day, or good day determines your fate. I think that is why I dislike other professional sport playoffs besides football, because you can come back despite a loss or two. Sports to me is more than just pure skill, but mental stability. In tennis you can see a match turn around because someone can't keep their mind in check, even though they are good. And Tennis allows anyone who makes the main draw win. Does it happen often, no but in every slam a top seed goes down early and I think that speaks to the physical and mental part of sports. I think the series system ruins that complexity a bit, knowing that you can lose, but still win.

Very well said. I've been watching the French open this week and its been very surprising to see the number one and two seeds out so early. I appreciate tennis players for their strong resilience.it's amazing how one person could play up to five hours, always cautious about the each point.Neteshy wrote:I love Tennis.

I know I was really sad to see Stan go. Honestly though there is something about Serena's attitude that I just don't like, maybe it is how she treated Sloane, so I didn't mind seeing her lose.chizzy wrote:Very well said. I'm not sad to see wawrinka go one bit. Still mad he won nadal at the Australian Open lol I like serena but I think there's some kind of beef going upon between her and Sloane. Sloan has also said some nasty things about her. Anyway I'm really looking forward to the rest of the tournament!Neteshy wrote:I know I was really sad to see Stan go. So since we are talkin about football, can anyone give me any primers for the World Cup. I know the sport, just don't know who is good, the big names, etc.

I figured you just watch what's on, form preferences based on current geopolitical alliances, and, most importantly, drink.The Dark Shepard wrote:So since we are talkin about football, can anyone give me any primers for the World Cup. Format Primer:The Dark Shepard wrote:So since we are talkin about football, can anyone give me any primers for the World Cup. I know the sport, just don't know who is good, the big names, etc.
32 teams are divided into groups of four. Within each group, all of the teams play head-to-head and are awarded three points for a win and one point for a draw. The two teams with the most points from each group advance to the knockout stage, which is essentially the Sweet-16 of the NCAA tournament. Win and advance; lose and go home.
Contenders: (IMHO)
Spain has dominated the major international tournaments for the last decade, but it is an aging squad, and likely out of peak form. One can't count out the reigning champs, however.
Germany is a force to be reckoned with. Its core players are in their prime and have World Cup experience. Unfortunately, Germany landed in the Group of Death with Portugal, USA, and Ghana, which could dampen its chances for a long run. But I like Germany nonetheless.
Brazil, as the host nation and a traditional football power, should definitely be vying for the Cup late into the tournament.

Haha it's understable. I feel like a lot of fed fans don't like nadal for some reason.
