It seems plausible to defer. I know at least one other school is willing to defer their full ride if you have a specific and logical plan with reasoning. Re: Chicago Law Class of 2017
The only reason that Chicago might be more hesitant to defer the Ruby than other schools is that I think the structure of the donation requires them to matriculate a fixed number of Rubies each year (though I may be wrong about that). So deferring it means they have to offer it to someone else anyways this year, and then are locked in for next year. Other schools could just mark your full ride as coming out of the budget for the year they award it and not pass it on that year.Instinctive wrote:It seems plausible to defer. But maybe I'm thinking about it in a silly way and Chicago would be perfectly happy to defer the Ruby.

No, that makes total sense. I almost typed out something to the effect of how the fact that Mr. Rubenstein gives the gift for a specific reason may alter Chicago's look. I then decided "worth asking" would suffice HAHAHAmidwest17 wrote:The only reason that Chicago might be more hesitant to defer the Ruby than other schools is that I think the structure of the donation requires them to matriculate a fixed number of Rubies each year (though I may be wrong about that). I think my softs are solid, but very far from godly. And I have no idea what I will end up doing! Tbh I originally had no intention of going to UChicago (due to location preferences), so this is a huge shock to my cycle. I am still in the running for the Jacobson and the Levy, and I haven't heard back from Yale. So I am waiting for all the chips to fall.t-14orbust wrote:sounds like you have some godly softs. thanks for the follow-up. I am kinda curious though to hear some opinions... what would you guys choose between: Ruby or Jacobson or Levy or HYS at $$$

Major Congrats to the new Rubys.
Loling a bit at myself for feeling "dinged" because I didn't get one, but this effectively ends my consideration of Chicago.
"Top 5 Law School? - better give me a full tuition scholarship + stipend or F that." Oh what have I become.
Congrats again to the recipients!

Ruby except possibly Y, but probably still the Ruby. The COL stipend blows the other full-rides out of the water, IMO.Ren wrote:I think my softs are solid, but very far from godly. What's so unreasonable about that? I'm only considering schools that will have a parade in my honor upon my enrollment, and where all of the professors will agree ahead of time to give me straight A's.Mal Reynolds wrote:Wow thanks for not going here.Optimist Prime wrote:Major Congrats to the new Rubys.

The only reason I would pass on the Ruby is if I was absolutely set on:
A.) Living and practicing in NYC, take the Jacobson at NYU
B.) Living and practicing in Pennsylvania, take the Levy at Penn
C.) Going in to politics, go to Harvard
D.) Being a judge, go to Yale
Short of being 100% about any of these I would take the Ruby. No debt and a law degree from one of the best law schools around? Not a bad deal.

I wasn't offered a Ruby, but I still got a lot of scholarship money. Don't rule anything out yet.

Also to those who haven't received Rubies but would seriously consider them, keep in mind that a good portion turn down the initial offers. If you hold out long enough, you may get one.

1.5 months isn't exactly exploding.

I wasn't complaining haha! I just wasn't aware the deposit was due prior to the regular seat deposit date for UChicago... it doesn't indicate this anywhere in the initial notification email.barrelofmonkeys wrote:I think April 15 is the first seat deposit?Ren wrote:Wait, is it an exploding offer???midwest17 wrote:How many went out after April 15 last year?thewaves wrote:Also to those who haven't received Rubies but would seriously consider them, keep in mind that a good portion turn down the initial offers. Re: Chicago Law Class of 2017
You should get a follow-up email soon attaching the official scholarship letter. The letter gives a little more detail, and mentions the April 15 date.Ren wrote:I wasn't complaining haha! Also, for anyone who would otherwise be confused (like I was), you do still have to put the $500 seat deposit down as a Ruby recipient. It will be applied toward fees etc. I was confused because the letter specifically mentions submitting the regular decision response form, but doesn't bring up the deposit at all.
Congrats to all the new Ruby recipients!

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
