Agreed. Low COL & $$$ at Penn woulda' been awesome.Optimist Prime wrote:Thanks for the info Nelson, that's very helpful.
Damn shame though, U Penn is the school I'd most like to be at and I'd have gone for sure with $$$.

What? The COL difference will come out to more than 30k for Columbia vs Penn??? I'm asking because I have a Butler but really love Penn.Nelson wrote:I've never heard of this happening in the last two cycles before this one. They stick to their system with the application essays.Optimist Prime wrote:Do we know if anyone has successfully negotiated up a named scholarship? E.G. from dean's scholarship to named scholarship, or from a 1/2 named to a Levy?I've never heard of them going above 20k/yr to beat CCN in any anecdote from the last two cycles (I tried myself). 20k/yr at Penn will leave you with less debt at graduation than a Butler at Columbia because of the lower COL here. That said, if you have the numbers to get more than that at those schools, you should probably have also been competitive for at least a Wilson, if not a Levy, and if you don't get one, enjoy New York/Chicago.paglababa wrote:Do they negotiate to counteroffer awards made by CCN? Columbia's tuition is like 5k higher to begin with (last I checked, which admittedly was awhile ago). You can easily save another 5k in cost of living per academic year in Philly IMO and more if you scrimp.Gary wrote:What? The COL difference will come out to more than 30k for Columbia vs Penn??? At equal or even slightly higher cost though, Columbia still might be the rational choice depending on your goals. On the other hand, I am spending roughly the same amount I would have paid at CCN to go to Penn, but that's because it made sense for me given my relatively unique situation.

For those going to ASW, are you basically signing up for all events or picking and choosing which ones you want to go to?

I don't think so, I think I'm either going to stay with a friend or at a Hotel.lawyerchick wrote:Is anybody here who is going to ASW requesting to stay with a current student?
Are people getting in Thursday night or Friday morning? I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to leave work early on Thursday.

Just signed up. So excited! Anyone know if the reserved hotel rooms in Club Quarters are a good deal? Or are there better/closer/cheaper options to Penn? I'll be staying Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night. (I've never been to the city, no idea)hahazby wrote:ohpobrecito wrote:I am arriving Thursday for the optional stuff and staying at a hotel in CC. They asked me to send them, but I had been in touch with someone in the FA Office with a question. I think typically they will consider you for an award with FAFSA/Need Access, but offers aren't official until you submit tax records.paglababa wrote:Did we have to do anything besides select Penn on the need access form? Are any local people going to be making the commute each night or are you gonna get a room so you can fully enjoy the festives.

Sorry if this has already been answered, but does anyone know if arriving on Friday night to ASW would be okay? I don't think I can take off work unfortunately. I know I'd miss a lot but I still think Saturday would be valuable.

Re: UPenn Class of 2017
Totally fine. You're admitted, now they have to convince you to attend. Enjoy it!
Also, it might be worth emailing them to see if they could set up a meeting with a prof for you or something if there is a particular thing that you are missing on Friday that is very important to your decision making process.
