Re: NYU Class of 2017 - Old Photos in OP!
hello nyu class of 2017!!! i am very excited to say that i was accepted yesterday. i love nyu and it's my top choice, but i'm concerned about aid this late in the game. i've deposited at a lower ranked but still top ten school with $75k scholarship that i also really liked, but my SO, friends, and sibling are in new york.
what were your experiences with aid from nyu? i think i could qualify for some need based, but i have no idea what nyu's reputation is for that type of aid. are they generous? stingy?
note that i've calculated a rough COA for each year at NYU and the other school, and they're about the same for me give or take a couple k (not counting the 75k scholarship i mean), since i will be paying very little rent in new york and will have less upfront costs for moving to new york than i will to the other school.
i'd appreciate any anecdotes and general impressions about the process you may have. YAY NYU!
edit: BOM, that was an edit. sorry for the confusion!

I think you'll find that NYU is not super forth-coming with aid. Just from the poll, you can tell that a lot of people got absolutely nothing at all.
Personally, I started out with $0 in merit scholarship (I would not qualify for need-based), despite being above both medians.
It took me two rounds of negotiation to get them up to a $62.5/75k offer. A lot of people ITT had far less success than I did in negotiation.
Beyond that, we'd really need more information to give you any useful advice (what are your goals, what are all your options, etc.), but I hope this at least helps give you an idea of the aid process. Feel free to PM me if you want more details.
ETA: sorry, I missed the part where you didn't include the scholarship in your COA calculations...

BOM - thanks so much. the other option is duke. academically i'm really interested in international law, and nyu has the best courses and faculty in the country. duke's isn't so bad either. short term career goal- i want to work in litigation in big law NYC. i think both schools would set me up just fine. problem for me is im canadian, so not eligible for federal loans, or any loans in the US in fact (without a us citizen cosigner). you need a cosigner for private loans in canada which means i'm dragging my parents into all of this, and that's not so fun for them either. so i'm really trying to minimize debt.
my LSAT is at their median, but my GPA is below their 25th. not exactly in a position for merit aid!

between trying to minimize debt, and trying to start off in nyc biglaw, i'd say go with duke unless you can get some money out of nyu, but, realistically, that's not the most likely option. you should definitely try though.
also, it's worth a shot to negotiate with duke as well. i don't know how negotiations go this late in the game, but you have nothing to lose.

NYU financial awards make no sense. I'm very thankful for my award, but I wish NYU would cut the $0 nonsense.

Re: NYU Class of 2017 - Old Photos in OP!
This is probably not the best place to post this. But, on the chance someone can help...
My SO will not be able to join me in NYC until the spring semester. I'd like to live in student housing (at least fall 1L and preferably all 1L). But, I'd also like to avoid the significantly higher cost of living in family housing both semesters (~7-10k+), when unnecessary.
Difficult question: How likely is it that one can switch from individual/shared in the fall to family housing in the spring? Do many family spots open up in the spring? My worry is that I won't be able to secure family housing in the spring, locked into a full year's lease in an apartment where my SO cannot join me. Fall only leases do not seem an option for entering students.
Aside from living off-campus or paying for family the entire academic year, suggestions?

I love the simultaneous posts on TLS followed by a facebook plea. Have you tried emailing NYU? Or calling? If it's not the financial aid office you're talking to, they can be really great.BobbyHTT12 wrote:This is probably not the best place to post this. But, on the chance someone can help...

edit: or is it totally impossible to do on-campus housing? My brain is fried from this midterm tomorrow.

Should have mentioned I've called and emailed. They've been great. Just asking whether anyone has a sense of how often these things open up in the spring. I've been told a number of things from different folks.

Checking in - I just got off the waitlist yesterday evening! I'm excited but nervous, since I've never visited the school and don't expect any merit aid based on my numbers. Up until last night I thought I'd be at Georgetown in the fall.

Congrats!! Depends on how much money you have at Gtown, but they are usually pretty stingy... and I think you'd love NYU.fkt18 wrote:Checking in - I just got off the waitlist yesterday evening! Thanks! I have a small scholarship at Georgetown ($15k per year) so I'm not expecting anything.phillywc wrote:Congrats!! Georgetown doesn't recognize a unique snowflake when they see one, obviously.

Sorry, I think my sentence structure was poor. What I meant was that I got rejected from GULC but received decent $ from Duke and NYU. Considering the difference in PRESTIGE and likely academic RIGOR I thought it was funny.barrelofmonkeys wrote:?SFrost wrote:"REJECTED"

Oh, I see. I understand the dangers of using quotes to emphasize words, as opposed to the more standard use of italics, for example. In this case there was little confusing my word as ironic, nonstandard, or as a quote. Since this is a non-academic, non-professional setting I still find the all caps word surrounded by quotes to be more visually pleasing and compelling, given the point I was trying to convey.
Also, that blog isn't actually funny. It was too one track.

I've never seen anyone use that like you do. It is not aesthetically pleasing, correct, or easier to do. Also, don't attack BOM she is way, way cooler than you.SFrost wrote: Oh, I see. You understood but were just being righteously indignant regarding a colloquial style that you didn't like.
