haha, I haven't gotten into all of them but I'll take that as words of encouragement! Based on the eight I have been admitted to, Duke gets points for including lots of swag but I think that UVA has the edge on design. I particularly enjoyed the individual leaflets for each concentration offered. And of course, lots of pretty pictures :P Virginia's packet made me 100x more excited about having been admitted!

Can anyone whose been to Charlottesville verify that the campus is as gorgeous as it appears in the photos? Because it looks really beautiful and it seems as if the town itself has quite a lot of interesting things to do and see. I hope to get down there for ASW and see it in person but other people's insight would be great! (And credit to RCO for an incredible OP; lots of valuable information there!)

Also, congrats to all the new admits! Even after only having been admitted for a few days, UVA has already reached out and been incredibly welcoming. The atmosphere at the law school must be incredible.

The main UVA campus is definitely gorgeous. The law school campus isn't quite gorgeous but it's very nice, and the facilities all seemed top-notch. From what I saw when I visited Charlottesville definitely lives up to its great reputation.

To be honest I've been down to C-Ville twice and I'm still working on seeing the whole campus. I had to reschedule my trip from last weekend to this weekend, and I hope to see more of it. The campus is really, really pretty. I think being there makes it seem even more gorgeous than pictures can. It's awesome to see that when you leave your classes you still aren't really leaving the school. Everywhere you go, you'll see classmates, professors, etc. Very, very tight community that is engaging and welcoming. The law school campus is located in North Grounds, but not too far from main grounds (little bit of a walk). If you want to see some cool things around UVA here is a list of things to search online for:

- Lighting of the Lawn (youtube)
- The Lawn/Academical Village
- UVA Cemetery
- Music Library
- McGregor Room
- Rotunda / Dome Room
- Edgar Allen Poe's Dorm Room
- Charlottesville Pavilion
- Observatory Hill
- Alderman
- Beta Bridge
- UVA Special Collections (Declaration)
- Humpback Rock
- Monticello (not part of the campus, still a must see)
- Old Cabel Hall

There are a ton more, but those are some that are on my list.

This.

I know that the timeline & expectations site says they will begin awarding scholarships on March 1, but according to last year's thread they started much earlier (January if I remember correctly). Does anyone know if they are sticking to March 1? Or whether last year's timeline also said March 1?

They said in the orange sheet included with your admissions letter that merit scholarships start in January so presumably it is only need-based aid that isn't until March. Here's some excepts from that sheet in the admissions packet.
UVA wrote:All who are admitted to Virginia Law are considered and evaluated for merit scholarship awards...We will begin making scholarship awards in mid January....Admitted applicants who complete the FAFSA and the Need Access applications by mid-February 2014 can expect to receive their complete financial aid packages by March 1, 2014.
Also, thanks for all the insight about UVA's campus RCO and Swampman! Can't wait to see campus myself!

Wow... that's new. I got accepted in November and got my scholarship on the spot last year. I heard they overspent, though, so that may have forced them to change the way they do things.

Yes, this year they are doing it differently than last cycle.

Anybody know how likely it is to get a one year deferment from UVa? I think that I have a good reason, one that will help advance my specific professional goals as a lawyer as well as my personal goals, but its not an extenuating circumstance. There seems to be a bit of a discrepancy on their website, one of the faqs appears to be relatively lenient and the other seems to be stricter about granting them...?

No harm in asking. PM hspeaksfriend, I'm pretty sure she deferred.

I'm just one data point but I got a deferral for work. And not exciting work either haha

SO unfortunately I will not be able to attend ASW. However I am planning to go out their on my own in about a month or so.
This may be a bit of a petty question but some people are advising me to contact the school before I go to visit but I am not sure what to say in the email. Is there something I need to make sure I do when I am out there that I am just overlooking? Do I need to arrange a tour with them beforehand? Who do you guys recommend I try to meet with?

The tours are scheduled for the same time each day Monday-Friday, so it would be fine if you just showed up. However, if you contact the admissions office through the general admissions email they will be able to set up a visit that is specific to your interests. I would advise meeting with JD or CF while you're there for sure. I would also recommend sitting in on one or two 1L classes and speaking with the professor after. If you have a specific practice area in mind they can setup a time for you to meet with students who are doing well in that practice area, professors, and if they have a journal or organization on campus, the president/members of that organization. Pretty upset about you not being able to make it to ASW though!

Ya I was not to upset about it but than I saw the awesome website they setup for it and now I am kind of bummed. It will just not work out with my work/school schedule. I will have to wait until the fall to meet you guys. :(

The undergrad campus is really pretty. It's separate from where the law/business schools are though (about a 5-10 minute drive). The law school building is impressive though and I was surprised how large it is

Charlottesville has a lot of unique things to do. It's by Shenandoah National Park and the scenery is gorgeous. There are cool hikes to do and dozens of wineries and some cideries. The food options are really good too.
