Just got my appeal from NYU. My award has been hiked to 85.5K. C'mon NYU, you couldn't just make it even with CLS?

What was your award previously? Also what other awards did you mention to them in your negotiation?

Yea, I think that was the case with both NYU and CLS. A lot less aspy than I would have imagined. They are all down to earth nice people. Honestly, I don't think that there is a wrong answer. NYU is a fantastic place to be.

Also, pretty excited to get an initial offer of over 100k from NYU this week! It happened to be on the first day of CLS' ASP.

Still haven't heard anything about $ since the end of Feb! Should I email the financial aid office and ask?

What's the result? Did they tell you anything? I emailed the "special finance person" assigned to me some weeks ago but he never replied.

Thanks! I sent them an email on Saturday (we were informed during the ASD info session on financing legal education that we should email if we have not heard anything), and they responded today. Now, maybe they already planning to send it today, who knows.

How is 85.5 split up? 35/35/15? Is that including the conditional PI grant?

Yes, that's the split. If I take PI route it would go up to 105K.

I was going to nit-pick by asking why the date on the reconsideration has 2/15, the date of the initial award, in order to get an extension of at least a week or so. Seems kind of dickish, though. Then again, I am going for Lit...

Most common suggestion is to e-mail the finaid office to get them to reactivate it for you.

Did you ask the financial aid office or the specially assigned financial guy? How did you address the financial aid office people?

Question: Money and fit being equal (they may or may not be IRL but for the purpose of this question let's say they are), should I go to NYU which is #6 in the nation and has better job numbers, or Berkeley which is #9 and has worse job numbers BUT is #1 for IP law which is what I want to do? NYU's IP law is not too shabby either, #4 for 2015. NYU, Stanford and Berkeley are the only ones among the T14 that are in the top 10 for IP law programs.

Caveat: these are USN&WR rankings for "best intellectual property law programs" and I don't know what their metric is. But let's just use it as a quick and dirty way to get this question asked and answered.

(I also want to go to NYU more than Berkeley bc I was at Berkeley for undergrad and I loved NYU when I visited.)

You're IP focused too? Sweet. You should go to NYU then because I'll be there

Seriously though, all that I've ever read about specialty rankings is that they don't mean diddly-squat. Consider general employment data, cost, and recruiting. If you want to work in Cali, then go with Berk. Vice versa for NYC and NYU. Otherwise, and all else equal, pick which city you'd like to live in for the next three years.

I thought you had to do both but I'm not sure. I don't see why you wouldn't do both though...

You only need to complete the institutional financial aid form if you're going merit-only.
