Unless today is the day, I'd say they're missing that deadline. I got the same email, but according to the finaid site I quoted earlier and Canof09's previous experience we'll hear in early March.Rt887 wrote:In the admission email that the1/21 wave received it said that scholarships would start to be issued by the end of February. Did it say the same in the emails the new admits received? Or is early march the new target date?

The 2/25 email said "Within a month of receipt of this email"Rt887 wrote:In the admission email that the1/21 wave received it said that scholarships would start to be issued by the end of February. Did it say the same in the emails the new admits received? Or is early march the new target date?

Sounds like early to mid March is the smart money (pun intended).

I have it on good authority that scholarship offers will start going out on 3/7 for EDs and those admitted in the 1/25 wave, 3/17 for those admitted in the 2/21 wave.

Checking in!!!
Sorry if this has been asked already, but how is placement in NY? I'm really excited about Chicago as an institution but I know that I want to be in NY after law school for personal reasons (haven't heard back from the NY schools yet). Would I have difficulty finding a job in NY? Do a lot/only a few NY firms come for OCI?
Thanks in advance!

Most major NY firms come to our OCI. Of the V50 NY based firms, the only ones I see that didn't show up were White and Case (which hired someone apparently so it's still an option), Clifford Chance, Orrick, and Wilkie (which gave mass mail CBs). Plenty of non-NYC firms with NYC offices interviewed for those offices as well.
I haven't seen the final list, but I think historically we tend to send ~35 people a year to New York and that is probably about right for this coming summer. I don't know of anyone who specifically targeted NYC and didn't get it either. Not saying my information is perfect or that everyone was rolling in offers, but the success rate is very high. There are just more NY firms interested in pulling Chicago grads than there are Chicago grads interested in NY.
That being said, if you have a narrow practice group interest and are already targeting specific firms, it is possible that they don't come to our OCI whereas they probably do show up to Columbia, NYU, and Harvard's. In that instance school matters a bit more, and if you think it applies to you feel free to post here or PM me w/ any firms and I can let you know if they show up here (and hire) or not. Otherwise if your interests are just working at a large firm, particularly the V20 or so, we do very well.

NYC is the easiest market for all schools to send to, UChi included. You probably wouldn't have any trouble.

Anyone know what Chicago's deferral policy is? I've searched all over and can't find any information about it (other than some possibly outdated info. from a questionable 3rd party source).

I was accepted last year and deferred for one year. It's a really easy process. They will have you fill out a form and then write a page long explanation detailing exactly why you want to defer. Again, it is nothing to stress about. I got the impression that they pretty much approve everyone. I deferred because I wanted to work for a year (not even a legal job) to save some money and get married and they were totally cool with it.
Additionally, if you receive any scholarships you get to keep them regardless of when you start. This is really nice because some schools will make you forfeit all scholarship money if you want to defer. The Ruby may be the one exception to this. I would look in to this if it applies to you.
However, don't apply for a deferral unless you KNOW that you want to come to UChi. The form that you submit that I referenced earlier contains an agreement that you have to sign saying that you will withdraw all other law school applications. Unless they have changed their policy from last year, you don't need to apply for a deferral until late April, so I wouldn't do anything yet. Wait and see where else you get accepted to and what the scholarship picture is going to look like before you apply because once they approve your deferral you are coming to Chicago regardless. You also need to submit a seat deposit before they will consider a deferral request.
If you are considering Chicago, I am guessing Columbia is also in the mix. For what it's worth, Columbia has the exact same policy regarding deferrals and transferring scholarship money. They even say on their website that pretty much everyone gets approved for a deferral.
Hopefully this makes some kind of sense. Shoot me a message if you have any other questions.

Checking in! Very surprised but very happy that I'm in! I
do have a quick concern that I hope someone can shed light on. From my basic knowledge of the school, I know it is very much based in economics and sends many graduates towards securities law...I have no economics background whatsoever and am hoping to steer clear of securities. Should I be concerned about this or do I have an inaccurate picture of the school?

Does this include Rubies? Because that already went out for the 1/25 people and IIRC it was a week after they had gotten admitted.Leo wrote:I have it on good authority that scholarship offers will start going out on 3/7 for EDs and those admitted in the 1/25 wave, 3/17 for those admitted in the 2/21 wave.

I answered this here or elsewhere, but with regards to classes economics stuff comes up, but it is pretty basic and not having a background in it is really not so much of a disadvantage as it is a slight advantage for the view that do. Plus to the extent that a topic is discussed from an econ POV it is usually a secondary/supplemental point. Many if not most of your classmates will be non-econ people too.omzster67 wrote:Checking in! Very surprised but very happy that I'm in! I

In terms of graduate placement I think that's a misconception (and one i haven't heard before actually). We send the vast majority of graduates to either mega firms (Vault/NLJ) or litigation boutiques. When firms hire you they don't expect you to know what narrow area you want to go into and most even sell their summer program by allowing you to dabble in a bunch of different things. If there is a sizable selection into securities it is likely by chance and certainly by choice.

The 1/21 admits got their Rubies two weeks after they got in. (2/4 or so?) Last year's January and February admits got their Rubies 1 week after they got in.Trig wrote:Does this include Rubies?
