So far I've read nothing negative about Summer Start nor the Lawyers' Club (other than cost). Has anyone heard anything that might dissuade us from either of these two? I just prefer to have a well rounded view of it all before I jump into anything

Re: Michigan Class of 2017
The only negative I've heard about summer start is that the first year gets looong. The 3 semesters all together ends up being a lot of time to be doing high-stress, high-intensity work like law school. A 3L I know said that her summer starter friends seemed pretty burned out by the end of 1L. That said, she also thinks that the summer start section gets really close, and also get to know profs really well.omzster67 wrote:So far I've read nothing negative about Summer Start nor the Lawyers' Club (other than cost). 0L, but the most obvious negative to the LC seems to be that you're basically back in a dorm with a dining hall. I was glad when I moved out of the dorms in undergrad, and I don't think I'd go back even if I didn't have pets and an SO.omzster67 wrote:So far I've read nothing negative about Summer Start nor the Lawyers' Club (other than cost). I'm glad many others seem to enjoy the benefits of the LC, but it's a "no way" for me, too. The negatives are directly on the surface; it just depends whether or not they matter to the individual. For my part, if I'm paying $1500/month for combined room and board, I want more than a dorm room/meal plan, even if the location and interaction cannot be beaten.

Fair enough. I was so excited to get out of the dorms too..but the interaction part is pretty intriguing. If not LC, then where are you all looking to live?Serett wrote:+1midwest17 wrote:0L, but the most obvious negative to the LC seems to be that you're basically back in a dorm with a dining hall. I'll get a house or apartment within walking distance. Since I'm from Ann Arbor, I have a few places I'm eyeing, all within walking distance. There's a pretty good list of the usual housing companies here: http://www.johnwcooper.com/annarbor/off ... chigan.htmomzster67 wrote: Fair enough. I haven't chosen anywhere yet, but my plan is the same as alex.cm's. I'm less familiar with Ann Arbor, though (went to another Big Ten school), so I have a lot of searching to do. On that note, thanks for the link, alex.cm!omzster67 wrote:Thanks man, appreciate the help.alex.cm wrote:I'll get a house or apartment within walking distance. No problem - and in case you didn't see, a bunch of info just went up on housing on the accepted students website.

Anyone have any info on the type of food w/ the LC meal plan? I usually try to cook pretty healthily and wouldn't want this to get in the way.

IMHO it really seems like something you have to weigh options on. Dorm style living isn't ideal. But my biggest concern about coming to A2 would be being completely surrounded by crazy undergrads while I'm trying to, you know, be a law student. I've been up there a couple times. Some of those buildings on that website alex.cm posted (not trying to throw him/her under the bus, it was indeed useful) are great, but can be overrun by rich, loud undergrads.

Re: Michigan Class of 2017
Oh, absolutely. I completely agree, and that's why I plan to live more like a 15 min walk away rather than right on campus. Most of the housing companies own properties on the North side (which tends to be a bit quieter, with more grad students) or further on the South side, toward Burns Park, which is more family-oriented, as well as the properties that are more centralized. Re: apartment complexes, If you don't want to live with undergrads, I'd steer clear of Zaragon and Landmark. The new complex that just went up on 1st street - I think it's just Ann Arbor City Apartments - are a bit more geared toward professionals. Just my thoughts!UserNameHere wrote:IMHO it really seems like something you have to weigh options on. Dorm style living isn't ideal. Re: Michigan Class of 2017
If we're talking about housing to avoid, under no circumstances (save, perhaps, it being literally the last open spot in a 50 mile radius) should you rent at University Towers. Sure, the location is convenient, a 3-5 minute walk from the Law School, but they'll ask for an arm, a leg, and your first born child for that proximity. The rent is outrageous, and the building hasn't been updated since it was built in the 1960s (not a whole lot of exaggeration there). Landmark, 411 Lofts, Varsity, and Zaragon are all spectacularly nice, but filled with rich UGs. These places will also ask for an arm, leg, and your first born, but will demand your soul as well. Tread carefully, friends.

Lol, I lived in U Towers my sophomore year in undergrad, and I can confirm livefromannarbor's assessment. Do not live there!livefromannarbor wrote:If we're talking about housing to avoid, under no circumstances (save, perhaps, it being literally the last open spot in a 50 mile radius) should you rent at University Towers.
