Okay. GONNA BITE THE BULLET, Y'ALL. Thanks!
For a thread revitalization idea, why don't we post pics of where we are/what we're doing this summer? Should be interesting since it seems like people are coming from many different places, and going on exciting expeditions. (I'm not traveling, but I am staying with my parents in the Bible Belt... which is like a different country in itself.)

W00t! Signed my lease for a beautiful apartment on on W 133rd near Broadway. Private balcony, rooftop garden, enclosed backyard with a fricken artificial river running through it, gym and laundry. Pretty stoked.

I'm bringing my 4 year old mac book pro. It works well enough but the fan runs a lot more often than it used to and the battery life isn't so great. I was going to put off buying a new laptop until it actually becomes unusable but maybe that's not the smartest idea....

They usually don't get unusable, unless you drop them a lot or something. I have a second one I gave to a family member that's 5 yrs old and still doing fine. That one I dropped a bunch of times too.

I've had a Macbook Air for the last 3 or 4 years and I really adore it. I use my computer for basic stuff and don't need souped up hardware, it's been helpful for when I find myself in need of good photo/video editing software, and most of all it is easy to carry around and whip out when I need to jot something down (also, tons of battery life). works super clean and it's been a joy. I'm never going back to clunky laptops.

Lol I've only dropped it a handful of times but I am kicking myself for upgrading it to mavericks. I feel like it's gotten a little more slower/laggy but for a 4 year old computer, it still works really well.

I was planning on using my 4 y/o Macbook Pro but a few months ago it got water damage and broke.
The new one is a huge upgrade imo. Battery lasts much, much longer which is great when studying/in classes and don't want to plug in. It's generally a lot faster and lighter. Not sure if it's worth the 2k for the small increases in convenience if your current one is working fine though.

2BR, 2BA with a roommate for $1270 + utilities. Roommate is paying $1480 + utilities for master bedroom. I'm just happy about the amenities and the proximity to Fairway.

re computers -- i'm using an almost-four-year-old macbook pro. the hard drive croaked half a year ago and i had it restored to factory settings. it's been working fine since, but i'm concerned it's gonna die on me sometime during 1L year, which would be stressful to say the least..
some people mentioned, in the 'ask a columbia student' thread, that 15" inches was better than 13", and i'm considering upgrading to a 15" model.. but that seems like a preemptive move, since my computer is currently working perfectly fine.
i think if i were to get a new computer i'd spring for the 15" macbook pro, but i also dig the idea of toting around a macbook air. they're so light...

I have a 15", previously had the 13" and I really don't feel any difference.
I think I will get my battery replaced even though it should be fine.
Also, I'm going to sync everything law school related with dropbox in case the computer fails.

This is a great idea, glad you said this because I wouldn't have thought to do this.

There's a Columbia discount for Dell and Apple products. I'm not sure how much we actually get off, but I can update after I get my new Mac next week. Still deciding between the Pro and Air.
Edit: here's the link

we haven't had any additional tuition deposits right? The website says to except an e-bill for tuition in August which seems kinda late.

Did everyone get the Peer Mentoring Program Email/Survey? I'm not really sure what they're looking for in the "3 things it might help your mentors to know about you" section - anyone have ideas of what sorts of things (academic stuff, social life, something else?) we're supposed to put down?

I haven't heard a peep about tuition. Could you link me to what you're referencing?

I think it's meant to be very open ended and it depends on what you want to get out of your peer mentor. So just go with what feels right.
I figure, I'll probably want to ask a lot of questions about the job hunt, so my three things were mainly about what kind of job I'll be looking for.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
