Re: Harvard Class of 2017
Tomorrow is day 10 for me. I haven't been putting the weight on it some people here seem to have, but I'm interested to see what they say. They asked for 1 extra document, I'm assuming to find out how my parents could survive on a few bucks a day worth of income. Anyone care to explain what the reasoning is suppose to be for asking about parental income when the majority of students are in their mid to late 20's and have no reason to expect major/any parental contribution even if the parents had the mean to contribute?

Re: Harvard Class of 2017
I'm typing on my phone now and can link later, but there's a write up on the financial aid section of the website about this... They acknowledge that often families can't contribute, but say it's essentially the most fair way to determine resources anyway. Pretty sure every school does this, and I guess there's no better way to do it.... But still, as someone who paid for undergrad by myself and doesn't rely on any support, can def be frustrating.CyanIdes Of March wrote:Tomorrow is day 10 for me. My book also finally came! "In Brown's Wake" by Dean Minow, with a really nice personalized note. So smart that they do this.

Re: Harvard Class of 2017
I shouldn't complain because it only stands to benefit me but I could see others not getting any contributions from their otherwise well-off family being in a bit of a disadvantage from this. I guess it'd be pretty hard for them to figure out just how cut off a person would be from a family's resources, though.

Well yeah it's just unfortunate all around. People would exploit any perceived holes in the parental contribution determination too, so even if they started trying to adjust for non-contributing families it would soon be impossible to determine who was being honest and who wasn't. I know they have an appeal form, but, like everything else, it's hella complicated.CyanIdes Of March wrote:I shouldn't complain because it only stands to benefit me but I could see others not getting any contributions from their otherwise well-off family being in a bit of a disadvantage from this. Man, I really need to hear back from SFS. I have a scholarship deadline next week and I need time to weigh it against whatever Harvard gives me.

Everyday I'm so excited to come home from work and see if my book came yet, and everyday I'm so disappointed. Serious first world problems here.

Books take between several weeks and several months to come.politics89 wrote:Everyday I'm so excited to come home from work and see if my book came yet, and everyday I'm so disappointed. Serious first world problems here.

Checking in. I'm so excited to have Harvard on my list of contenders. When do they usually send the acceptance email after the phone call?

*Usually* you'll get the e-mail in a day or two, with all of the info you'd need in a week. Then the book comes several months later.yomisterd wrote:Checking in. I'm so excited to have Harvard on my list of contenders. When do they usually send the acceptance email after the phone call?

This. So frustrating. I get the logic, but really wonder if there's any other way? I haven't even been able to complete my aid application because my parents keep neglecting to fill out the forms...CyanIdes Of March wrote:I shouldn't complain because it only stands to benefit me but I could see others not getting any contributions from their otherwise well-off family being in a bit of a disadvantage from this. +1 I'd really like to talk to the finaid folks when I'm there for the ASW, but I don't know that we'll have anything to talk about....juicebox wrote:This. So frustrating. Yeah, I completely understand where you guys are coming from. I was finally able to get them to do the forms, but it took months of constant back-and-forth.HorseThief wrote:+1 I'd really like to talk to the finaid folks when I'm there for the ASW, but I don't know that we'll have anything to talk about....juicebox wrote:This.
