Did anyone else notice that the picture at the top of the acceptance email changes, depending on what platform you're using to view it? I thought I had gone crazy, since I distinctly remembered seeing a white guy with glasses in my computer's browser when I looked at it yesterday. When I woke up today and opened the email on my iPad (to make sure I hadn't dreamed the whole thing), the person in the photo didn't have glasses on. I checked on my computer again, and glasses-guy is still there.

Just booked my plane tickets. Never been to Chicago before (or anywhere west of Pennsylvania, for that matter) so I'm really looking forward to it. I'm pretty sure Pizzapalooza will be a life-altering experience.

To the first round folks deliberating on Ruby vs HYS, strongly recommend you pick the latter. Ha!

As a current UChi undergrad, I'd like to make the following note about housing: I strongly recommend that you look into options outside of Regent's and University housing. I'm currently living in a pretty spacious one bedroom (has two common area rooms-my girlfriend and I use one as a living room and one as a office/dining room) with total rent+utilities coming out to less than $1k/month, which my impression is that it's significantly cheaper than anything you'll find at Regents, even stuff with way less space. It is an old building so it doesn't have all the amenities that Regents does, but it hasn't been a problem for us. It's also on a street with mostly houses and families instead of undergrads, so it's pretty quiet.

I would steer clear of MAC unless you want to be near undergrads and definitely don't live in a Blackstone apartment. Our landlord is McKey & Poague, and I've found them pretty good. There are also tons of independent landlords in Hyde Park if you keep an eye on marketplace.uchicago.edu (though it's way too early to start looking). Hyde Park is generally split between June-June and September-September leases, but there are also at least some apartments always available during the year.

I realize that the 1L community at Regents is tough to pass up. But Hyde Park really isn't that big, and there's decent shuttle and bus services to get around. You can go to Regents for parties without living there.

Warning about Regents Park:
Their leasing office is full of employees who absolutely suck at their job; the Internet randomly drops out for hours (or days) at a time; they do construction for months at a time, making residents hear jack-hammering, sawing, and all other kinds of pounding noises from 8:00am~8:00pm; and their management office is full of pricks (except for the receptionist - she is really nice). Instead of shutting down the building to do construction like they did with Shoreland or Del Prado, MAC is trying to renovate the place while people are still living here, so if they are doing any work on a floor near you, you will hear shit all the time. They are going to start renovating the lobby later this year, as well as replacing a lot of the concrete work on the side of the building, and they won't tell you about this at leasing time, so just beware before you sign up to live here.

(I am saying this because they've been renovating the floors around me since I moved in last July, and it is literally the most annoying thing ever. I am moving out over spring break because this shit has been so loud that I can't take it any more, and management's stance has been "deal with it.")

You will find that people generally have pretty polarizing views about Regents. I am also a strong proponent of living elsewhere. Even in the surrounding area there are other buildings with better management/prices that will still keep you close enough to be a part of that community.

Checking in! Does anyone have any intel about living in one of the UofC-owned apt buildings? If I attend, I'll be moving from D.C. and don't want to schlep all of my furniture/buy all new furniture, so thinking about one of the furnished buildings...bad idea?

To each his own

I lived in the student ghetto around 54th street for a year. The trick is to be confident and assertive about telling your neighbors to shut up when they're still partying at 2 am on a Wednesday.

Regents comes w/ significant downsides but I am 100% glad I lived there 1L year and would do it again. The social benefits cannot be overstated and it does have a lot of amenities under one roof which is invaluable should we see another god forsaken polar vortex next year.

The downsides are well publicized and all true but like Crowing said it's really polarizing. You will find a ton of (almost certainly most) people who are glad they live there, they are just less vocal.

Here is my pros/cons list:

Pros
*"Gym" in building that is free (including pool)
*Cheap restaurant in building
*Views
*Everyone else is living there
*Doorman - People visiting don't have to wait outside for your buzzer system to work
*Apartments are relatively large square foot wise
*Indoor Parking ($170 a month, but VERY worth it compared to the shit show of street parking especially in the winter)
*Access to free internet
*Very responsive maintenance staff
*Location is prime for the 172 bus (right on the start of the route, you will always get a seat)
*Shuttle for after the 172 stops
*For those who can't make it to Chicago to apartment hunt, it's the easy/safe option

Cons
*Incompetent management
*Unrenovated apartments feel dated
*The elevators never seem to all be working and 4 elevators for ~35 floors is not many
*You can get better amenities for the same or lower price
*There are nice buildings close enough to have the same location perks (and many of the social perks)
*The fitness facilities kind of suck, other buildings might have free gyms that are better
*If you want cable it has to be directv
*The free internet sucks, the paid upgrade sucks only marginally less
*Verizon is the only cell phone carrier to get even close to consistent service in the building
*Floorplans are a little wonky in some cases



Overall I think the pros outweighed the cons, but it really comes down to subjective factors. How much do you value the social benefits and the convenience vs how much you value amenities and responsive/adequate management. It can go either way for sure, I just didn't want it to seem like everyone hates Regents.
