Re: Duke Class of 2017
so i'm coming from a state that has a $350 subsidy, but I can find flights for around $225. I'm wondering if they just reimburse the flight amount, or if I'll get a check for $350? If the former then I'd rather take a more convenient flight, if the latter then I'll book now and be happy to have some extra $$$'s to put towards a hotel. They seem pretty strict about receipts etc which makes me think that they're just reimbursing actual dollars paid towards a flight, rather than giving you $350.
Any thoughts? $350 travel subsidy or "up to" $350 flight subsidy?

The way it reads, I imagine its the latter. Plus, none of the reimbursement happens until once you arrive at open house and have given the school all the receipts, so I don't think you can just pocket the cash. I'd take the more convenient flight, but your best bet is to just call them.Pneumonia wrote:so i'm coming from a state that has a $350 subsidy, but I can find flights for around $225. I'm going to take the flight subsidy, but I don't want to stay at some random cheap motel. Would anybody be interested in sharing a 2-bed hotel room to save some $$$? I'm a girl, btw (so obviously only girls).

Re: Duke Class of 2017
Very belated check-in. I'm still undecided, but nonetheless very excited for Duke!
I'm going to be applying for need and merit aid. Apologies if this is a dumb question, but I can't find the answer ITT: Is there a benefit to filling out Duke's scholarship/need forms sooner rather than later? In other words, is there maybe a pattern of better scholly offers for those who file earlier? Or is there some other mysterious disadvantage that may come my way due to my overwhelming impulse to procrastinate the Need Access process? If not, I may just wait for 2014 taxes to be filed rather than doing this twice, but curious what y'all think.

My impression is that earlier isn't really going to help you so much as later might hurt you. I think of anything after mid-march as being late. How long do you have to wait on your W-2's, and/or parental info? February should be doable, and that's probably what you should shoot for.

Regarding the ASW stipend, is it just flight vs. hotel, or do they offer mileage as an option? I will be driving and have already booked my hotel. I can't remember where this info is

The info is linked from the first welcome page on the ASW under the Open House section, but here is what they have to say about reimbursement based on mileagelawschool22 wrote:Regarding the ASW stipend, is it just flight vs. hotel, or do they offer mileage as an option? Duke wrote: For Car Travel: Write your full name, city of origin and actual miles driven to Duke (one-way) on a piece of paper. Mileage will be doubled for round-trips. Staple this to the Request for Travel Subsidy form. If you drive your personal vehicle, the reimbursement can ONLY be applied to mileage. If you rent a car, your reimbursement can be applied to the cost of the rental and gas. Please retain all receipts. (Reimbursements for driving may not exceed the amounts listed above; the same guidelines apply)

Yeah, the parental info is going to be the biggest hold-up, but with February in mind, I think I can make it work. Thanks for the insight and opinions!Pneumonia wrote:My impression is that earlier isn't really going to help you so much as later might hurt you. I think of anything after mid-march as being late. You can submit estimated numbers. That's what I did. Do you think your parents could give you some estimates using last year's info?demersal wrote:Yeah, the parental info is going to be the biggest hold-up, but with February in mind, I think I can make it work. ASW registration form is up now. It wasn't the last time I was on the site a few days ago.
Flight and hotel are booked! Looking forward to it.

(First post ever on this website!)
I would really like to go to the ASW but as other people have already said on here the travel stipend might not even cover my full airfare. If anyone else is traveling in from out of state I would be willing to share a hotel room and car rental (if needed) to cut down on costs.
I'm also wondering if anyone has received a response as far as the financial aid form goes. According to their email it says:
"Your status checker will be updated to confirm initial receipt of your scholarship form. The Scholarship Committee will begin to review applications in late January and will send scholarship decisions via US Mail. Your status checker will also be updated at that time."
As for me I only submitted my form to them yesterday so it has not been updated in the status checker yet.

Thanks for the post, I hadn't had a reason to check the ASW lately and would have otherwise missed it.msweenz wrote:Not sure if others saw, but there is a link to an accepted students Facebook group on the admitted students site now.

Re: Duke Class of 2017
Checking in.
Got the email last night! I am not sure if I am attending yet, I still am yet to hear from other schools and weigh options, but Duke is definitely up there and one of the best schools someone could hope to be admitted to.
Does anyone know if Duke gives much if any need based aid?
If it is primarily merit based, is there a good numbers baseline to qualify for merit aid?
