Re: NYU Class of 2017 - New Photos in OP!
Just got my $0 financial aid letter as well, 3.6x/175. I'm going to visit both NYU and CLS first week of April and this definitely put a downer on that. FWIW I have no money to speak of but my parents, who paid for my undergrad but aren't paying for law school, make comfortable livings and I thought their income/net assets (especially my dad with whom I did not live with growing up but makes much more than my mother) would probably hurt me.Jessasaurus wrote:Got $0 in merit aid, which was a bit disappointing considering how much I loved it at ASW....sigh...
edit:171/3.75, submitted my form about 2 weeks ago
I have been extremely fortunate to grow up with the financial support given to me by my parents and I know I am incredibly lucky compared to the majority of college graduates. But it does make the first time going into debt all the more intimidating, especially to the tune of sticker + NYC cost of living.

They tend to have an uneven distribution of scholly. Some get a lot, most get barely anything, if at all any.
That said, the appeal is there for a reason. They are low-balling you.

Got the Dean's award when I checked my fin aid today. 62.5K, pretty fucking shocked I was able to get anything considering my numbers (3.4 175). I guess it helped that I'm super poor haha. I know this is gonna be a stupid question but....this is just grant money right? Like that doesn't include loans at all? I'm pretty sure the answer is yes but I just want to make sure. It doesn't seem possible that I was able to get ANY money from NYU, let alone that much.

Same as me. I appealed. It's grant money, yes. If you scroll down, you will see how much you will have to borrow based off of it.moopness wrote:Got the Dean's award when I checked my fin aid today. 62.5K, pretty fucking shocked I was able to get anything considering my numbers (3.4 175). I think NYU and most schools generally know what you're worth from early on. It's your job to get to that worth through negotiation.

Re: NYU Class of 2017 - New Photos in OP!
I would definitely list Duke and Chicago; if you leave the section blank, they may assume that you are not seriously considering any other schools, and will therefore have less of an incentive to give you $. My guess is that simply by listing Chicago on the application (I'm not sure if they care about Duke), your chances of getting money will increase. When I filled out the merit application I had only heard back from Columbia and NYU (I only applied to 5 schools), and I still received a significant merit offer (I put Columbia down under the schools that I'm seriously considering section, obviously).drawstring wrote:So I under-applied and things have been slow for me so far as I'm still pending at most schools I applied to. The institutional merit aid form asks for other schools I got accepted at and am seriously considering, but I only have Duke and Chicago aside from NYU, which doesn't exactly put me in a good position. Anyone have thoughts as to whether I'd be better off leaving this section blank?

Did you use another (higher) scholarship offer from a peer school to appeal?Theopliske8711 wrote:Same as me. I appealed. It's grant money, yes. Agreed-thank you! Here's hoping they make more calls this week!gma221 wrote:Thanks so much for looking into this and sharing!leezabee wrote:For people still waiting on RTK, I did a little digging through last years' thread. It seems there there was another round of interview invites this second week in March (most people were reporting on Friday, so not sure if it was concentrated around then or spread out), and then some were waitlisted for an interview the week after. You can check out that part of invites here:

There also seemed to be general consensus that, if you applied for a named scholarship, the Financial Aid office would not release any scholarship information if you were still in the running for the big one.
No idea if they're doing it the same way, but hopefully means there is still hope for those of us anxiously awaiting a phone call

90k from CLS...I don't think you'll have a problem with that appeal haha. Congrats on all that $$! Furman Public Policy notifications are going out, for those that applied. I didn't get it. Good luck to those who applied!

Yeah it was by e-mail for me. I got an RTK invite though. Interesting to see two different outcomes on these, because I felt like RTK was sort of inclusive of the Furman Public Policy requirements. Furman PP is only taking 2-3 this year and 1 more after 1L-I guess they were being very selective.kathj06 wrote:Are they via phone or email? How do you know if you didn't get it? I know there were a couple of people ITT where it took 2-3 weeks after "final stage of review" before getting their award notification. Has this been most people's experience?
