lol how did you identify these gunners? Were they asking professors to recommend them for SCOTUS clerkships or something?koalacity wrote:wtrc wrote:Post-ASW thoughts:
1) I've just changed my poll answer vote to "aww, yiss!" from the "LASTSamurai_idk_club."
2) Speaking of which, LastSamurai is a good roommate.
3) My main reservation going in was that people would be hard to connect with at HLS. I didn't go to a preftigious UG or grow up like that at all. This was almost entirely unfounded though... everyone was so normal and pretty great. Including/especially the TLS folks.
4) Obviously there will be gunners. But the gunners were pretty rare, at least this weekend.
5) HLS did a really good job with the weekend. The only things I would change are the bars they rented out, since it would be way cheaper (=more drinks) and less crowded to do the same thing they did on Saturday night at HLS.
6) Also: "HLS: A smart financial decision?" should not have been at 9:30 on Sunday morning after the clocks went forward an hour...
7) Way too many people determined that our TLS-contingent knew each other from TLS. It was kind of ridiculous how literally the majority of people there read or have read this thread many times.
8 ) As an example: on Saturday night at the bar I was talking to two people who I did not realize read TLS. In the middle of the conversation they turned to each other and said "YO WHERE DO YOU THINK SCOOBERS AND LAWSCHOOL22 ARE AT?!" I still have not figured out who they are on TLS... reveal yourselves, 2 dudes in red shirts.
9) Another example: Someone else figured out who we were, ended up being a pretty active poster.
10) TripTrip, where you at? Also, Specs, you too, and TheWaves.![]()
+1 to what wtrc said, except I'd disagree with the description of gunners as being "pretty rare"-there were definitely more than I was hoping to see. That being said, they were certainly the minority, and most people were lovely, especially the TLS crew (of course).
Overall, I had an amazing weekend and I'm extremely glad I went. It definitely makes me less stressed about waiting for a decision from Stanford/Yale/the others I don't have decisions from and about waiting for scholarship info elsewhere. I wouldn't say I'm 100% sold, but I think I'd be very happy if I end up at HLS.
Also, I am still recovering. I need to get in better drinking shape before law school, obvs.
P.S. seriously, out yourselves, red shirt lurkers.
P.P.S. There were several times I felt a bit starstruck-as someone else mentioned, Senator Warren made a brief appearance, plus getting to see JS and so many famous professors in person was pretty cool.

Some of them were asking Dean Minow, "What is justice?" in front of 300 other people.
Some of them were in awkward, ill-fitting suit jackets like they were trying to dress for a firm interview.
Some of them were sitting next to the professors at every opportunity asking a lot of extremely well thought out and researched questions.
Oh, and I heard that at one of the other mock classes there was a kid arguing with the prof on every point, but I wasn't there so ya know, grain of salt.

Someone tried to make the point at the lunch with faculty on Monday that men and women might be biologically different and thus have different natural aptitudes, so maybe men are more naturally suited for some things. Everyone at the table (including the professors), except one guy, was a woman. It was awkward.

So honored to have spent a lot of time with a celebrity of The Specs' caliber...definitely made ASW that much better.The-Specs wrote:I just have to say that I feel so loved that so many of you wanted to meet me, I had no idea.
But I did spend most of the weekend with Charlie.Black and Brich256. Thanks for a great weekend guys.
I was on the fence between UChi and HLS before this weekend...not anymore. I knew ASW was supposed to be legendary, but it was SO much better than I'd thought it would be. Looking forward to meeting all of you in the fall!

Lol. He about bulldozed me over when passing me in the tunnel on the way to the activities fair after that session. He was walking about twice as fast as anyone else in the hallway and narrowly slid his way right through me and the person I was talking to without saying a word.politics89 wrote:+1000cway wrote:Some of them were asking Dean Minow, "What is justice?" in front of 300 other people.

Re: Harvard Class of 2017
Not that report specifically. Someone asked about being a woman at HLS. The professors talked about how they often felt more sexism at Harvard than when they were doing work in the Middle East, and cited an example of a former President of the College saying something about men being biologically more adept at logic (or some such bullshit), then this guy piped up in support of that position.t-14orbust wrote:was that in reference to this: http://www.law.harvard.edu/students/exp ... A few of my thoughts:
1) Wtrc is quite chipper in the mornings, and thank god for that as I would have missed Sunday's events due to my hangover otherwise.
2) Don't predict gender based on avatars.
3) Don't drink beer and wine all night for free and then buy vodka until 2 in the morning on the day clocks change.
4) HLS is fantastic at selling itself over the course of 3 days, BUT the magic started to wear off a bit during my trip home when I started thinking about the debt.
5) The HLS library is insane.

While he seemed very nice and I feel bad calling him out, I will state for the record that the guy saying men may be biologically more adept at logic than women during the human rights discussion was the same guy who asked "what is justice" during the large discussion.t-14orbust wrote:Someone please tell me that these people don't end up at the top of the class.goldenflash19 wrote:Lol.
