Looking for housing and checking out everything at Penn and Philly :D :D :D
How about you guys?
Same here. Is anyone considering living in the graduate housing? I don't know much about it, but it seems convenient.
Penn's on campus housing, Sansom Place, is definitely convenient, and some people are reasonably happy with it. I was personally unimpressed when I visited. Dim hallway lighting, just seemed like a miserable atmosphere.

Sansom Place is pretty pricey. For $1500 a month, you could get a room in a luxury high rise near campus like the Radian or 2400 Chestnut which are much nicer.

http://www.2400chestnut.com/floorplans.html

If you were looking at the lower tier of rooms, at over $800 a month, you can get a decent studio near campus - you can check out craigslist or Penn's off campus housing search.

Check out the Penn Students taking questions thread, there's a bunch more information in there. Also - wait until ASW - I'm sure the welcome committee will be very helpful and informative regarding housing.
I've been working with these guys. They have some very reasonable options.

When is everyone looking to move? I was planning on August 1st, but that seems excessive if orientation isn't until the 27th :?

I'm trying to negotiate a later start date for my lease - to mid or late August. Some places may only allow leases to begin on the first of the month. Also - you may have a better chance at more competitive apartments if you're willing to start in July.

I've decided to focus my housing search in University City, though I've heard many Penn Law students live in Center City. I'd just rather walk through Penn's Campus (34th to 40th st.) at night than across the bridge from 34th st to Center City. Not that I'm concerned about the safety of that commute - it's just my own preference. (to the unfamiliar, Philadelphia is basically a grid with numbered streets running north to south, and higher numbers are west, lower numbers are east).

Same here. I'm looking almost exclusively in UC now.

It depends on the cross streets, because north and south of Penn's campus can get sketch too. As a conservative estimate, I'd say from Spruce to Chestnut[edit: on second thought, Pine to Market] from 40th to 43rd or so is fine - just have your wits about you like you normally would. Plenty of frat houses are located on Spruce, Walnut, Locust, and Chestnut west of 40th. At 40th and Walnut is the Fresh Grocer, pretty much the best supermarket in the area.

If you have any extraordinary concern for your safety, Penn's security services offer free escort services home. http://www.publicsafety.upenn.edu/secur ... ng-escort/

Safety concerns aside, I wouldn't go further west simply because of how inconvenient it is to get to the law school, at 34th.

I visited Sansom when I visited a friend in Penn. God that place is depressing. He also told me a very amusing story about how the room was infested with hundreds of cockroaches that refused to leave..he called exterminators weekly.

Anyway, I'm not too keep on university housing, but it's there as a backup and that's nice.
Blackfish wrote:Are you guys familiar with Philly? At what point does West Philly get rough? I've heard everything from 40th or even further out from like 48th.
I'm definitely not from Philly, but I'm close to several people who also went to Penn. One lived on 40th (and I stayed there too) and it was completely fine. Another lived on 43rd, and he said it was janky but not terrifying. He recommended not living past 45th under any circumstance.

Also...I just found out Philly decriminalized years ago...so I'm pretty happy about that. :D

Are people generally planning on having a roommate or going solo?

Solo. I'd like to stay in the same apartment all three years and roommates add too many variables, especially people I don't really know.

Congrats to you new admits!

I'm leaning toward getting a studio at this point. Like everyone else said, I don't want to risk the worst case scenario with a roommate. I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunities to socialize

Though wouldn't it be awesome if we got a huge group together to get a 10+ bedroom townhouse :D ? http://universitycityhousing.com/proper ... houses.php

As for finding roommates - try posting on the fb group? Who knows, maybe we'll hit it off with people at ASW. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1411015949134595/

Blackfish - I'd estimate a half hour walk from Rittenhouse or Grad Hospital to the law school. Probably under 15 minutes if you're biking or if you're close enough to City Hall to catch the 15th st subway and take that to 34th st.

This is like, the living situation I've always wanted but never got a chance to have. If this happens, I want in.

lol never thought this would be an option. Count me in too if it really happens.

Just curious, anybody in NYC now?
