Judges Who Hire 1Ls?

Post by Anonymous User » Wed May 14, 2025 4:17 pm

Which judges are known to hire 1Ls? I've heard Thapar, Newsom, Stras, and Richardson often hire very early. Any others? I assume most are FedSoc judges?

Judge Jerry Smith on the Fifth Circuit hires exclusively 1Ls who have received two semesters of grades

Readler does on CA6, but I have heard to avoid him.

I don't know what Readler is like as a boss but when i was on the Sixth Circuit he seemed very nice and personable and friendly with his clerks so this is very suprising to me. Maybe more fratty in the vein of Thapar or Nalbandian though so I guess if that is not your crowd, you wouldn't do well.

Readler comes off as a bit of a tool interpersonally imo but I don't know that that's a reason to avoid him.

Most Fed Soc judges will hire, at the least, candidates with two semesters of grades. Some will hire clerks with one or zero semesters of grades--I know Newsom, Richardson, Oldham, and Thapar have in the past--but that's more unusual. All else being equal Trump judges are more likely to hire very early than GWB/GHWB judges. Ask your Fed Soc chapter.

What is Ho like as a boss? I've been kinda surprised that he hasn't fed any clerks to SCOTUS yet. Does he just not care about that? His former clerks seem to be doing well for themselves, I will say.

What about Stras? Does he ever hire 1Ls with less than 2 semesters of grades?

As someone who helps coordinate clerkships for a FedSoc chapter, let me just say that a LOT of judges are willing to hire 1Ls with only one term of grades. You just need to be coming from the right school, have the right people to vouch for your ideological commitments, and have that one set of grades be good (though what "good" means is a bit of a sliding scale depending on what school you're coming from and other factors)

I clerked on the Sixth when Readler was relatively new. I thought he was nice and personable as well (as a liberal who has strong disagreements with Readler on ideological grounds). His clerks seemed to really like him, but they talked about working long hours and his chambers was slow getting work out the door. That said, that may have been a function of his newness to the bench.
