How competative am I?

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Feb 07, 2024 11:33 am

Thinking about federal clerkship - i know one of the Vice Chancellor's on the Court of Chancery went to my law school and want's to hire clerks from this school.
My goal is to eventually get into Big Law. What should i do?

Assuming your school is outside the T14, you're not competitive. Even for courts in the state your school is in (where students presumably punch above the school's weight nationally), you're not that competitive because you're not in the top 10%. But no harm in applying.

I’m not totally sure what the question is. Are you asking about a Chancery clerkship or a federal clerkship? If you know one of the chancellors on the Chancery, that seems like you have pretty good odds there. As for a federal clerkship, probably not very competitive, but if you can leverage some connections, it’s not totally out of the realm of possibility.

I'd say you're competitive in your geographic area for federal district clerkships. You are also competitive for bankruptcy clerkships or many other non federal district clerkships.

Look for judges that are alum from your school as well. Take your shot.

Also, I think you're certainly competitive for Biglaw in your area.

I think you're competitive for chancery. It's not that hard to get. Probably on par with a flyover district court.
