Who are the "heavy hitter" profs at Cornell?

Post by mysonx3 » Sun Jun 19, 2022 5:10 pm

Not really sure how to find out who the best professors are for clerkship recs at Cornell. I know it obviously depends a lot on your relationships with the professor, but I'm trying to differentiate between a couple professors and don't have the slightest clue who would have more pull or how I can find that out. Any advice?

Edit to say: I know we're not exactly a heavy-hitting school for clerkships, I just mean relatively speaking

It’s most important to choose the professors who can speak the most highly of you (combination of who knows you the best and who you got the best grade in their class). I think everyone on the clerkship committee will be good but Tebbe, Dorf, Richardson, Gardner, Colb etc. are all strong recommenders.

This is probably the best advice. But would add, as general individuals: Johnson, Rachlinski, Stiglitz, Wendel, and Rana. Though, Rana is leaving, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Wendel leaves soon.

Sorry to hijack the thread--but who are the ones at Yale in the modern era?

I've been reviewing clerkship applications, and this time around I'm shocked by how many applicants are using a professor who takes forever to submit recommendations and whose recommendations are just downright awful.

You really need to find someone who likes you and whom you like, who will take the time to write a meaningful letter for you.

The same names that always appear on TLS threads, plus Driver

For Yale and Cornell or anywhere else, look for law professors who themselves clerked on SCOTUS. This is a pretty good indication that the professor is a "heavy hitter".

What names are those? Can't find a focused thread.

Any list that includes Greenhouse or Amar seems pretty outdated.

Things haven’t changed much. Subtract Greenhouse and Chua, add Driver. My sense is Amar is still doing Amar things.

Chua pushed her students very hard to our chambers, and I’m not sure how much her rep has actually been hurt outside of the YLS bubble

Curious what your judges take on her opinion was.

Always fun when a thread about professors at Cornell Law becomes a thread about Amy Chua...
