Involvement in Organizations During Clerkship

Post by Anonymous User » Fri Jan 28, 2022 3:09 pm

I got a district court clerkship and am really excited to start. I have a couple of leadership positions in different organizations and was wondering how judges generally feel about their clerks staying involved in such organizations/if such involvement poses a conflict of interest.

Specifically, my involvement is:

1. Board member of local bar association (affinity-based bar association like a women's bar association or ethnic bar association) - will sometimes publish press releases/statements that might? be considered political
2. Junior board member of a non-profit that participates in legal advocacy work
3. Board member of alumni association organization

Thank you all in advance!

(1) is probably fine, (2) you'll likely have to quit, and (3) is definitely fine. The relevant provision is the Code of Conduct for Judicial Employees, canon 5.
