Too late for 2021?

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Mar 24, 2021 4:31 pm

So, I'm a 3L and am currently sending out apps for 2022-23 clerkships (mostly district court). My current plan is to work in biglaw for a year before clerking (I'm starting at a v10 in NYC in the fall). But, I've noticed a few 2021 clerkships on OSCAR still accepting applicants. My question is: will my firm be annoyed if I apply to these 2021 ones and get hired, and therefore only give them a few months notice that I won't be showing up this fall? For context, I'm being hired into a litigation practice group, and my firm is generally *very* pro-clerking. I just worry that getting a 2021 clerkship and telling them so soon to my start date may jeopardize my chances of getting hired back when the clerkship ends. Is this a genuine concern, or will the firm not care? Also, is there any best practice on broaching the subject with my firm?

I mean, most of these positions have probably actually been filled by now but I got an unexpected 2021 offer in March and my firm was totally fine with that. I don’t know if there’s a particular cutoff date when it becomes annoying to them, but at least in the spring, it’s probably not a problem. They’ll just be happy for you to clerk.

I received a recent 2021 offer and I’m a current first year. Told my firm and they seem fine with It. Apply all over and for whenever and take what you can get.
