When will my firm reach out during my clerkship?

Post by Anonymous User » Sat Dec 21, 2019 12:51 pm

I'm doing a one year clerkship now, and plan to return to the firm (biglaw, major market) I summered at afterwards. For anyone who's done this, at what point in the year do firms generally reach out to talk logistics like start date, moving expenses, etc? Thanks!

I'd just email HR yourself so it doesn't keep you up at night - they do this every year and they'll know better than anyone here since this probably varies by firm.

I worked for a year at a V10, then clerked for a year. The firm's policy was to say they don't hold positions for clerks, but then also take them back if they reached out. I decided not to go back and reached out around May of the year my clerkship ended to let them know I wasn't planning on going back (I only did this because after I left the head of my practice group at the firm emailed to ask if I planned on going back and I said I planned on it, otherwise I would have just not bothered to reach out). A friend (from the same firm) who also worked a year, and clerked a year reached out around March/April about returning to the firm. I would wait until at least february (I would even say March/April) to reach out if you don't hear from them first and their normal practice is to take summers who clerk in between. If it's not normal practice for your firm to take back summers who clerk, then reach out early (late jan/early feb) because you don't want hiring to finish before you reach out.
