After submitting an application a couple weeks back, I got a form email from the judge this morning saying basically "Thank you for the application. As you know we receive hundreds of applications, and will alert you if you have been selected for an interview."
Should I respond to this email with a brief "Thank you, I appreciate your time and consideration and hope to have the opportunity to interview," or would that be unnecessary and irritating given that the judge sends out hundreds of these confirmations?

And possibly irritating. You hit the nail on the head. (It's not going to help you, at any rate.)
