Three years of clerking lined up, looking to switch firms, when to apply? Forum

Perused TLS for a bit and couldn't find an answer to my question; would greatly appreciate any knowledge on this topic.

I was fortunate (I think) to land a 2-year COA clerkship, after having already accepted a 1-year DC clerkship. I've accepted an offer from the firm (V15) I summered with last summer, but am now looking to switch markets post clerkship. I'm currently a 3L graduating in a few weeks.

Question: At what point should I be contacting firms I'm interested in switching to?

From what I read, apply immediately after new year of the year can you start working, so spring 2019.

That's generally right. As always, though, check with your judge. At least a few judges are super strict about when their clerks can apply to firms, with some not permitting clerks to apply until just a month or two before the clerkship is over.

Remember also that if you switch firms you'll have to repay the bar expenses and stipend to your firm and return any reimbursements they provided you. It may also be worthwhile to check with your judges that you can accept such an offer and the large sums of money that come with it prior to your stint in chambers.
