Right now I have two professor LORs and an LOR from a pre-law school employer. This employer is a lawyer I worked for in 2007; since then she has become my mentor, and is in fact the very reason I'm in law school today.
I thought this would be a strong LOR, but the Clerkship Office says all my recommenders should be able to speak to my current abilities. Is this right? I'm in the process of replacing an extremely enthusiastic and glowing letter from my mentor with a third professor letter (from a prof who I don't know particularly well); I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing before pulling the trigger.

Current clerk. If all the professor's letter says is "I had X in class, he got an A- on the exam, and was competent when called on," he is not going to help your application. Won't necessarily hurt if credentials are otherwise good, but won't help. Use the letter from the former employer IMO.
