If you have an interview from out of state Judge, do they pay for your flight and hotel or is it out of your own pocket?

You're going to have to pay out of pocket.

Since you have to pay, its a common tactic to "parlay" one interview into more by notifying judges you haven't heard from that you'll be in the region and would be able to interview then.

A very, very, very few judges will pay for travel. I can think of one. It's incredibly rare.

The judge for whom I clerked would ding you if you did this. I'm sure he/she would not be alone in doing so.
