Fed MJ to SSC? Forum

Hey all:

Background: I'm a non-HYS 2014 T14 grad. I start a MJ clerkship this fall in a western state. Thereafter, I'm moving to a major market and hope to use the clerkship to get into a firm (I skipped OCI because I had PI plans at the time--it wasn't grades-motivated). I had hoped to get a second clerkship with a DJ in or near my target market to help get into a firm, but it hasn't yet panned out (largely because my school lacks strong ties to that market).

Last year, I applied to the CJ of an SSC that neighbors the market, and the CJ called to ask me to interview one month after I was offered and accepted the MJ gig. She understood and said I should apply again this year if I remained interested. Without divulging too many details, this judge is better known and more influential than most SSC judges (though I don't know whether that matters). As nothing else has yet panned out, I'm wondering whether I should pursue the position.

Advice? It's a paycheck, and I'd get LRAP help from the law school. But I think I'd pass on it if I were more confident in landing a firm job next fall. I don't know whether my MJ clerkship will have pull over 1,000 miles from this particular city (hence, why I'm entertaining the SSC).

I think it would help but totally get not wanting to do a second clerkship. Weighing that is something only you can do. I signed up for a second clerkship for the reasons you listed even though I'd probably rather go into private practice.

The SSC could definitely help you though. My first clerkship is about to start with a SSC and I have been hanging with the justice a bit because he throws parties and shit during the summer and has invited me to lunch a few times. It is crazy how connected these people are in the area. It makes sense -- getting appointed in a lot of states is much more about being connected to the entire bar rather than just the true big wigs. If your judge really is better known and connected than most SSC judges -- like Justice Strine of Delaware or something -- it could only be better.
