When is the "best time" for a current clerk to blanket-apply for biglaw openings that start in fall?

Say you have a 23-24 clerkship, would the best time to apply for September 2024 be December 2023? Or is it so firm-specific there's no general rule?

I share this information of my failure so that others may succeed. At the very least, this information let's us know the firms in California that are reviewing post-clerkship submissions. Firms that have rejected me thus far: Fox Rothschild (LA/SF); Munger Tolles Olson (LA); Milbank (LA). Break a leg out there!

Recently learned that my judge will not let me apply until June at the earliest. How screwed am I? I have some experience before clerking and will be looking in NY. Hoping can leverage my prior experience/have friends pass along my resume...

as in, your judge will not let you interview until 2 mo's before you finish?

if so, you would be pretty fucked for BigLaw. I would try to gently explain to him/her that the hiring process will be essentially over by June, that it's ordinary course for clerks to interview starting 6 mo's in, you can recuse if necessary...

What type of judge is it? I've heard of one COA judge in D.C. who has a similar policy, and it made it very difficult for their clerks. I wonder if you might be able to start networking before June, even if you can't formally apply until then.

It's a district judge in a major city (not NY), but many people do try to go to the major east coast cities after. And not sure, potentially to avoid conflicts? I also haven't heard of any other judges having this rule. I'm just mentally preparing for an uphill battle

I know prior clerks from my non 2/9/DC COA chambers have obtained post-clerkship gigs at big law firms, including V25 and even V10, over the summer just before their September-ish end dates. So although I agree with everyone it is certainly not ideal, don't give up all hope!

That's good to hear! I'm not too picky about where I end up, as long as it has the practice I want to specialize in. My prior firm no longer has work in that area, otherwise I would go back there

I summered at a firm where the policy is that you don't accept a formal offer if you were clerking first. I think they said to reach out in the "spring" before a fall start date, but that's so vague that I wasn't sure when to reach out...

No first-hand knowledge, but you can probably feel comfortable reaching out whenever you'd like. Worst case scenario is they tell you to reach back out in springtime.

HH turnaround is usually pretty quick. Generally will tell you one way or the other within two weeks and likely sooner than that.
