To the SLS students: this time of year is the most competitive, especially for rising 3Ls because the hiring market is flooded with applicants from the rising 3L class. But keep sending out apps and don't lose hope. It may feel like a race because your classmates are getting clerkships, but it's really not. It's about getting a great clerkship with a great judge, and you'll get one eventually, even if you have to wait a year or two before clerking.

I'm saying this as someone who went through the process not too long ago. It took me nearly a year to get 2 clerkships targeting "competitive" districts/circuits. I was near the top of the class at HYS, was patient, and waited for great judges to come along. I couldn't have been happier with my outcome. Good luck!

I'm a Stanford student with solidly above-average grades and a good firm on my resume this summer, and I've sent out over 100 applications with no responses whatsoever. Not sure if it's a problem with the judges I chose to have my recommenders call, or my writing sample, or what. Trying to tell myself to play the long game because this is so tough.

Side note: How do I know which judges to spend my recommender calls on now, since I don't know for sure whether many judges are still hiring? I've seen lots of judges who still list open positions on OSCAR when I know they've made multiple offers.
Are your profs old friends with any judges? Find out. Have your profs call those friends.

To the SLS-er and others feeling defeated:

Do not give up! I'm a T6 student that started applying last year (most of the judges I was interested in are off-the-plan). After very many applications, I finally (Finally!) got an offer.

For the last year, I have seen others get amazing clerkships--some doubling-up on feeders, while I got rejection after rejection. I don't even want to think about the money and emotional energy I used-up going to multiple interviews during which things seemed to go well, just to receive a kindly-worded rejection letter a few days or months later. For the past year, I felt extremely defeated and considered just giving up on multiple occasions--including as recently as last week.

I'm so glad I didn't give up. Over the course of just a few days, everything changed. I not only got a clerkship, but it's with an amazing judge that (1) I thought I never had a shot with and (2) that has already proven to be a caring mentor.

The clerkship application process sucks and isn't really predictable, but perseverance matters... A LOT. Good luck.

What are the odds that any of COA judges that are marked as having available 2020 spots are still pulling candidates to offer interviews to?
Or judges with clerkships marked expired?

Current clerks:

I know your judges tend to conduct interviews when things slow down, but how about the opposite:

do judges extend offers (of employment) during busy weeks?

Just curious and antsy.

Anyone know if Judge Anello (SDCA) has hired someone for his 2020-2022 clerkship? The OSCAR listing expired this week.
