I've had multiple interviews recently and no responses (nothing "yes" or "no" yet). Why do they do this to us? just interview people in a confined time period....

Believe it or not, judges actually have better things to do than hire clerks. Interviews are time consuming and it isn't all that easy to fit them into a judge's busy schedule.

Students are busy too amd have to actually travel on their own dime to interviews. Also students have to do a balancing act because of all of the rules around accepting offers. Its not all that ridiculous to ask for a somewhat prompt response.

I understand your frustration, but no one forced you to apply. No judge is intentionally stringing applicants along. But they have more immediately pressing concerns than clerk hiring. I also think the importance to most judges of getting it right when they make hiring decisions leads them to take their time.

I had a good experience in my clerkship application process. I just didn't like the tenure of the earlier comment. Its not unreasonable for a student to feel frustrated and its not unreasonable to expect judges to be considerate of students.

Sure. But it is unreasonable to expect judges to rearrange their hiring practices just so applicants aren't waiting so long between the interview and hearing whether they are being offered a position.

Also, the conventional wisdom is to not bother chambers, either directly or through a recommend, even if the judge is taking a really long time post-interview to decide, correct?

Sorry to post another one of these, but has anyone heard from Judge Murguia (9th Cir)? She stopped accepting apps on OSCAR about two weeks ago.

Anyone heard from Skykes, Niemeyer, Hartz, Anderson, Bybee, Colloton, Niemeyer, Sutton, or Tymkovich? MVP, applying everywhere and just getting going. So wanted to check if some of these people on Oscar are already finished.

Not a great answer for you, but it depends on the school and your grades. Some non-T14 schools (think Texas, Vanderbilt, etc.), do pretty well in terms of clerkship placement. And even schools outside of the Top 20 can do OK in their home districts/circuits. I'd need more information to give you a better answer.

There are people from my class doing federal district court clerk ships and CoA outside of our circuit and inside of our circuit. So it depends on the candidate, but as a non-t14 student the hardest thing is getting your materials (and then yourself) in front of the judge.

The strong regional schools, e.g. State flagships, that place well into their smaller markets tend to do pretty well for their top students each year. Consider 'Bama law or UGA, for example, which place 8-10% of their grads into art III directly from law school over the past couple years. Of course schools like Texas and Vanderbilt do well. Now, mind you that these graduates are overwhelmingly clerking in their local districts, not in DC/NY/CA. Your chances at a federal clerkship in the most desirable locations go down considerably from a regional school since you're competing against all the T14 students with strong credentials.

Thanks guys. I go to a T1 but I think the clerkship numbers are pretty low. Can't hurt to try I guess because my grades aren't an issue. I just feel like I have no idea what I'm doing.

Supposed to talk with an OCS member about it on Monday. Hopefully it'll help.

seriously. there are so few law students even from top schools that actually get any COA interview, not to mention 3 or 5.

Yeah I understand that fully, and it's nice, but at the end of the day having interviews is nothing more than a warm fuzzy to make myself feel better while I'm in the same boat as everyone else who isn't clerking...
