Re: Movement Today
This will depend on district/circuit/judge of course. MY read is that the majority of hiring decisions have been made, but definitely not ALL of the hiring decisions. In particular, I think any judge hiring for 2-year terms or who is less grade-conscious may not have needed to move super fast in reaction to the plan (the plan sort of set off a first mover's advantage for the obvious candidates who are still in law school, since they all became available to review at the same time). Also, any judge who values experience strongly is probably unbothered by the plan, and may or may not be still reviewing apps.kiwi50 wrote:Do any clerks have insight on whether we should expect any movement this week, or have hiring processes pretty much died down for now?
I'm sure other clerks have different opinions, though.

Re: Movement Today
I suspect those are the applicants who struck out with their preferred judges in the first round and who are now sending out another round of applications. From a 2/9 chambers that's done hiring: we were surprised with the number of outstanding apps that came in over the past few days. No buyer's remorse at all about the wonderful people we hired, but it felt odd seeing several applications that would have probably been given immediate screener interviews if we had seen them during the first week come in after we had already made all of our offers.

Does anyone know if magistrate judges are moving just as fast?

Re: Movement Today
That was our guess too. We also noticed that several of the applicants had 2020 district court clerkships in competitive districts on their resumes (we were hiring for 2021 this summer), so we thought maybe that these candidates had focused on 2020 in their first round.Anonymous User wrote:I suspect those are the applicants who struck out with their preferred judges in the first round and who are now sending out another round of applications. From a 2/9 chambers that's done hiring: we were surprised with the number of outstanding apps that came in over the past few days. My 2020 COA judge isn't done hiring yet, and I know tons of district judges still interviewing for 2020.

I've heard of at least a few judges still taking applications on the district court level.
The bulk of the hiring is probably done, but there are openings out there.

Kelly made an offer a couple of weeks ago. Not sure if still hiring.

Re: Movement Today
I'm so tired, guys. I'm a Stanford student with solidly above-average grades and a good firm on my resume this summer, and I've sent out over 100 applications with no responses whatsoever. Not sure if it's a problem with the judges I chose to have my recommenders call, or my writing sample, or what. Trying to tell myself to play the long game because this is so tough.
Side note: How do I know which judges to spend my recommender calls on now, since I don't know for sure whether many judges are still hiring? I've seen lots of judges who still list open positions on OSCAR when I know they've made multiple offers.

No advice but solidarity; also SLS student with above-average grades and excellent work experience. Applied broadly to district courts, including some much less competitive districts. Heard absolutely nothing. Are you asking your recommenders to do a second round of calls?Anonymous User wrote:I'm so tired, guys. Re: Movement Today
I just think this process is so arbitrary and not prone to follow a logical course. I spammed a bunch of apps as an alumni candidate with a bunch of prior clerkship experience but not necessarily with elite grades or school. I’ve gotten three interviews including one magistrate in a competitive district.
My interviews were in less “competitive districts,” I guess. But I’m not sure that’s really a thing. Like, some districts are actually harder to get for a SLS grad in the middle of nowhere because the judge hires locally. I guess it’s just not surprising that some havnt had success with more flu over type clerkships when they have no demonstrated reason to be in the area besides the clerkship. Most judges I interviewed with cared about that.
I can’t speak for the larger districts. I just know that they’re all super competitive, but perhaps in different ways.

Re: Movement Today
Have you applied to both D. Ct. and COA? If so, 100 applications isn't that much. I don't know if you've aimed towards competitive courts, but that could explain it. It's a numbers game. You can have great credentials and not land anything if you don't apply widely enough.Anonymous User wrote:I'm so tired, guys.
