Definitely interested in this. Have had a job with a small firm in my hometown locked up since I started clerking in federal district. I'm pondering applying to mid/big law. No SA. Transfer student from ttt to UT. Did well grade wise at both schools. Still expecting the ttt start, albeit with top 6% grades, to lead to radio silence and rejection. Oh what I would give to go back in time and study for/retake the damn LSAT! Ha, my chambers didn't receive the Quinn letter. We received ff, cleary, and some firm in Denver.

i dunno i think UT + dist ct (are you in texas?) would get you some traction. it's time to start mass mailing; don't count yourself out at all, breh.timmyd wrote:Definitely interested in this. Re: Post-Clerkship Job Hunting (fall 2016 hiring cycle)
Any thoughts on negotiating clerkship bonuses? I know the market is fairly static at $50k for one year and $70k for a second, but does anyone get the sense that the Quinn thing may shake things up?
The other question I have is whether there is greater negotiating room for diversity hires. I'm a 'diverse' lawyer coming out of a very desirable clerkship (i.e. 2/9/dc/sdny/edny/ddc) and the firm I'm most interested in has a huge dearth of lawyers in the diversity category I fall into. Is that leverage or are clerkship bonuses just too static?

With Quinn slashing their SA program, I think their bonus is a bid to pull people away from their summer firms. Doubt it'll move the market much.JusticeJackson wrote:Maybe I'm just a shit negotiator, but I hate negotiating with the only place I want to go work. Because if they say no, I can't go somewhere else, and I have a slight fear that it might breed some resentment. I guess you could mention Quinn's letter and tell them that you had hoped that they would match it.Anonymous User wrote:Any thoughts on negotiating clerkship bonuses? Thanks for the encouragement. My clerkship is actually in my home state of Louisiana. And I've already taken and passed the louisiana bar. I'll take another bar if I have an incentive to. I'll start mass mailing and just see where the chips fall.grand inquisitor wrote:i dunno i think UT + dist ct (are you in texas?) would get you some traction. it's time to start mass mailing; don't count yourself out at all, breh.timmyd wrote:Definitely interested in this. I'm starting an off-cycle clerkship soon that will end one year from now. When should I start applying to firms?

Re: Post-Clerkship Job Hunting (fall 2016 hiring cycle)
Many judges don't allow their clerks to keep their former firm's offer open, due to conflicts of interest. Presumably that means one can't accept an offer from the same firm or another firm until the clerkship is over. But interviewing during the clerkship is OK? I'm a little confused and also wondering how and when to start looking for exit options so I don't have a huge gap between the end of the clerkship and the start of the next job...

Re: Post-Clerkship Job Hunting (fall 2016 hiring cycle)
Check out the federal law clerks' handbook for a more detailed explanation, but the upshot is that you can start interviewing for jobs and accepting offers as soon as your judge says that it's ok. Anecdotally, most federal judges understand that, in a year-long term, a clerk will probably be applying for jobs only a few months into a clerkship. So they're pretty cool with it.Many judges don't allow their clerks to keep their former firm's offer open, due to conflicts of interest. And definitely talk to your judge about it. Mine was happy to for my summer firm to hold open my offer throughout my clerkship.Redamon1 wrote:Many judges don't allow their clerks to keep their former firm's offer open, due to conflicts of interest. Can you pm me? Thanks.Anonymous User wrote:Received Cleary DC (last week) and WTD (December) mailers in D.Ct. in the Eleventh Circuit—not N.D.Ga. or S.D.Fla., so not a huge district. Didn't receive the Quinn letter, but a friend clerking on CA5 forwarded it to me. We also got a mailer from Fried Frank in the fall about some kind of public interest fellowship, and a mailer from SPLC.
As far as hiring, I've had three interviews (NY/DC) and accepted a position. Without revealing too much, I was top quarter at lower T14, no summer SA position. I applied to about forty firms, mostly V50, in December and early January (Southeast plus NY/DC) and have heard from about half; most were form rejections.
Word on the street is Gibson DC has been interviewing people (not me though). I have friends on other courts who've interviewed in Houston. If you're interested in Atlanta, I don't think they've started moving yet; I hear they're typically March. PM if you're interested in who I interviewed with, if that would be helpful.
My advice: start applying if you haven't already, although apply to your top choices first; the cycle is definitely a rolling one.

So you'd be done clerking in January of 2017? I don't have any experience with this, but if it were me I'd probably start applying now. Firms are starting to hire for a Sept/Oct/November 2016 start. Some might consider hiring a clerk to start in Jan/Feb 2017 as well.Anonymous User wrote:Please, can anyone respond?Anonymous User wrote:I'm starting an off-cycle clerkship soon that will end one year from now (late January). Applying to Quinn. Does anybody know if the bonus for 2 clerkships increased since their base clerkship bonus went to $75k?

Just put in for a handful of USAO offices...I wasn't nervous about it until I hit send. I'm a bit of a weird case though. COA clerk with 3+ years of serious trial experience.

Please keep us updated on how it goes. Where there openings listed or just cold apps? I will have be in similar situation coming up. Not 3 years significant trial experience but will have first chair experience in biglaw. Listed openings. It's so funny because up until I hit send, I had been debating in my head which office I was going to go to, and then I hit send, and now I'm praying for a round 1 interview.Anonymous User wrote:Please keep us updated on how it goes.
