From what I know, this is quite a rarity on the 9th Cir (though there are definitely a handful of 9-5 chambers–I've heard this about Fletcher and Hawkins specifically). Obviously, most aren't going to be Kozinski-esque hours, but ~10-14 hour days and frequent weekend work seems like more the norm than the exception.Emma. wrote:MSB?NYCBriefs wrote:I'm clerking on 9th Cir. now. SDNY next year. The 9th cir. is grueling. I work 7 days a week/14 hr days. . . .and no, not for A. Kozinski. Should I expect this nightmare to continue next year in SDNY?
Also, I know some double clerks who lock the offers down early. Should I start applying now? end of my clerking seems so far away
I worked pretty much 9-5 for my CA9 judge.

Re: SDNY Clerk Taking Questions
My 9th Cir. Clerkship was cake. But it was for a senior judge with a (IIRC) 66% caseload and virtually no en banc work. Seems like we had a ton of 2 page mem dispos. If I had to write 3 full published opinions after a sitting, that sucked and meant late hours. If all my cases were mem dispos, I'd have to surf ESPN to make it to 5.

Re: SDNY Clerk Taking Questions
What is the process on evaluating applications? Do you wait until all letters of rec are in? Are some applications either given special attention or discarded before then?
