It doesn't seem like Pillard has posted on OSCAR. Is she hiring this year?

It's possible she's not -- she's hired both Katzmann and Brown Jackson orphan clerks in the last year, so she may not have spots to fill.

By my eyes, Feinerman, Friedrich, and Tatel all haven't posted either. The latter isn't the most surprising; the former two are. Could just be late posts, Collins (kind of bizarre he posted at all since he's usually an early-hiring conservative) posted quite recently.

For a 3L applicant who got apps in late May, is not hearing anything yet a bad sign or do most judges wait for the plan to open to review 2Ls with 3Ls?

If anyone is looking to start clerking immediately, there is an immediate opening in San Diego federal district court:

I found these immediate openings are a good way to get to the top of the stack because there are far fewer applicants.

On the flip side -- speaking from experience, sometimes if a judge has an immediate opening that could be a red flag. You should find out why there is an immediate opening. Did they recently fire a clerk? Did the clerk that was going to fill that position get the offer reneged or they decided not to clerk for that judge?

GL's to all furiously prepping / finalizing rn. How frequently are you going to keep your profs posted through this week? I assume would be annoying if there's too many interviews (not that I expect it to be my problem), but might it move the needle if you have 0-2 invites? Or is it best practice just to hold off until the cycle is done?

Add *us.courts.gov to your email whitelist. Applied off-plan and had my first interview invite go to junk mail. (Got a call the next day, fortunately.)

Are people planning on emailing or calling for parlays? What kind of OSCAR disclaimer would make doing either a total no-go?

This is a horrible idea in general. These people are busy; they're not going to take your call.

It's not a horrible idea. I know plenty of people before COVID that did this and got many interviews this way. I'm not sure how it works now with remote interviews, but if you're traveling to a court house, shopping interviews might still be worth it.

Oh I thought this person was talking about cold calling chambers to ask for updates!

Yeah, I think if you’re at the courthouse already for an interview, it’s not a bad idea. Or if you got an offer and you have a first choice that’s of a similar caliber, not a horrible idea to reach out and let them know that you want to interview with them.

Has anyone gotten a sense yet of whether judges are going to be requiring in person interviews or online? Judges seem to have both as options on OSCAR and my clerkship office is truly useless in predicting/getting intelligence about this. (Hey, current clerks, take pity on us and give us the inside scoop, haha.)

The judges off-plan seem to be doing screeners over Zoom and final interviews in person. That said, I suspect many judges will be fine doing final interviews over Zoom for candidates that they believe may be stolen by other judges.

Popular judges probably won’t make applicants travel cross-coast for an interview since they’re competing with other judges on a similar timeline who might be in the applicants’ summer city. Not because they’re being nice to the applicant as much as the applicant may turn them down to go to the (several?) interviews next to their internship office instead if they have the choice.

My school's tracker says several invites are out. On OSCAR, Rao is filled for '23 (may reflect pre-Plan interviewing)

Are said invites the usual suspects/the most competitive judges.

Usual suspects in terms of Republican-appointed circuit judges who are not on the plan: yes.
Competitive judges: no. (I think most on-plan judges—a group that includes nearly every competitive non-FedSoc judge—are reasonably good about sticking to the letter of the plan.)

I am sure a bunch of law students would love to jeopardize their chances for a clerkship by blabbing about the judge online before they have an offer lol.

You can just post the info the clerkship offices give to all their students

Roughly ~25 interviews have been recorded in my school's tracker. Spread of appellate and district. Leans heavily conservative but a few non-conservative

Yeah, obviously this is a perk of going to those schools, but feels like just saying which judges have offered interviews is not disclosing confidential school info. Would love it if someone gave some clues!
