Does anyone know if there has been any action for fall 2021 from any of the COA staff offices besides the 7th?

Any speculation on when more COA judges will post on OSCAR, for this year or beyond? The only recent one I'm seeing is from the therapist.

Re: 2021-2022 Clerkship Application Thread
I heard a couple months ago that Tatel in CADC was planning to post for 2022 in the fall, though I wouldn't be shocked if he waited longer. Wilkins in CADC is posting for 2022 in the spring. Not exactly posting, but I have heard recently that Flaum in CA7 has not even started looking at apps for 2021 yet.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 1:30 amAny speculation on when more COA judges will post on OSCAR, for this year or beyond? Anyone know if Talwani hired for her 2021 spot or if interviews have gone out? Seems like the positions expired

According to this doc on Cronan’s website he has one spot left for 2022 and hasn’t hired yet for 2023

Someone said way, way up that Sam Lindsay had finished hiring, but he didn't update the posting until last week. It's tough.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Sat Oct 03, 2020 12:02 pmAnyone know if Talwani hired for her 2021 spot or if interviews have gone out? Seems like the positions expired
I'm curious about Cote, Castel, Berman; Block, Azrack; and Thompson. They all posted ages ago.
Chen (E.D.N.Y.) claimed she wouldn't conduct interviews until October, but she filled the position last week.

Uhh I wish the OSCAR posting would've mentioned that the writing sample is supposed to be 10 pages or fewer. I went ahead and submitted my default 15-pager. Probably sunk now.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Mon Oct 05, 2020 8:01 pmAccording to this doc on Cronan’s website he has one spot left for 2022 and hasn’t hired yet for 2023

OSCAR also asks for only one writing sample so there are a couple of strange inconsistencies. I think you'll be in the same boat as the overwhelming majority of applicants, I just got lucky and stumbled across this document while doing procrastinatory scrolling.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Mon Oct 05, 2020 10:48 pmUhh I wish the OSCAR posting would've mentioned that the writing sample is supposed to be 10 pages or fewer. Does anyone know roughly how many of the still-open clerkships on OSCAR are actually still open? I have ~ 30 applications still available from original submissions in June and curious how many are actually still available or just have not been updated

Need all the help I can get at this point. Recommenders have already called judges for me to no avail. Have pretty much exhausted my specific knowledge of which profs are connected with which judges. How wild would it be to email a prof who really likes me (but is not a recommender) and say "these are the judges I'm super interested in, would you be comfortable calling any of them?" I feel like a call from a prof they don't particularly know is better than no call at all, but does that request come off weird to the prof?

Not wild imo, I did this and it was very well-received by the professor. They were really enthusiastic about helping.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Oct 07, 2020 5:04 pmNeed all the help I can get at this point. Recommenders have already called judges for me to no avail. Re: 2021-2022 Clerkship Application Thread
You know this prof better than we do, but most professors would be happy to do whatever they can to help. A lot of professors see connecting students with judges/employers as an incredibly important part of their job, and professors still remember their own mentors who made similar calls back in the day. The worst the prof will say is "no" so there's no harm in reaching out.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Oct 07, 2020 5:04 pmNeed all the help I can get at this point. Does anyone know, of the circuit judges with available positions still posted for 2021-2022, which ones are actually still hiring? I assume Flaum, Baldock, and Rawlinson are all still hiring/haven't started.
I am more curious about judges like Bibas, Bress, Carnes, Eid, Fuentes, Greenaway, Hull, Marcus, Nygaard, Owens, Porter, Schroeder, Smith, and Walker. All of whom have active posts for 2021-22. Can anyone comfirm these judges are full and just slow to update OSCAR?

Word on the street is Flaum has not started hiring and has no immediate plans to until he can do in-person interviews. Not sure how long he'll hold to his guns on that, as it seems doubtful that will be safe before at least the spring, giving a pretty short time between potential hiring and start dates.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Wed Oct 14, 2020 10:48 pmDoes anyone know, of the circuit judges with available positions still posted for 2021-2022, which ones are actually still hiring? Edit: This is pure speculation on my part (not based on any insider info) but I also wonder if he might be considering going senior, as that could be an additional factor in delaying his posting I suppose.

I would expect a lot of turnover in the Seventh if Biden wins. I would be shocked if Rovner doesn't go senior, probably Flaum too, and Barrett's seat will open. Feinerman will likely get elevated and could become an even-feedier judge. Easterbrook and Wood could also go senior but seem to be healthy and have a lot left in the tank. I can't see Kanne willingly retiring under a Democrat even though he's getting up there.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Thu Oct 15, 2020 11:39 amWord on the street is Flaum has not started hiring and has no immediate plans to until he can do in-person interviews. It could also become pretty liberal very quickly. Sykes, Kanne, and Brennan could be the only truly reliable Fed Soc judges left active by 2022.

Same anon with rumors about Flaum's delay in hiring--interesting speculation. I guess it's even possible that that's part of why Feinerman seemingly hasn't finished hiring for 2022, if he thinks he'll get elevated. I do wonder if someone like Flaum or especially Easterbrook, as Reagan appointees, would rather go senior under a Democrat or Republican president. I seriously doubt Wood would go senior; she's still extremely sharp and not yet extremely old.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Thu Oct 15, 2020 3:15 pmI would expect a lot of turnover in the Seventh if Biden wins. Edit: I'd also add that I'll be surprised if Trump doesn't rush to fill Barrett's CA7 seat in the lame duck.

Flaum generally doesn't vote with the conservative block on hot cases, though he's not a flaming liberal like Rovner. Before Brennan and Barrett were appointed there were plenty of Fed Soc types who complained that the only reliable conservative on the Seventh was Kanne.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Thu Oct 15, 2020 3:20 pmSame anon with rumors about Flaum's delay in hiring--interesting speculation. I guess I've just always thought of him as an aggressively moderate soft-conservative like Scudder. He seems to hire from both ACS and FedSoc at my school. It's hard for me to guess if he even has a preference as to who would replace him. Maybe I just haven't read enough of his opinions.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Thu Oct 15, 2020 3:26 pmFlaum generally doesn't vote with the conservative block on hot cases, though he's not a flaming liberal like Rovner

Does anyone know if Judge M. Smith (9th Cir.) has moved for 2021 at all? His OSCAR posting is still opening and I'm wondering when he'll start accepting applications for '22.
