Re: 2019-2020 Post-Clerkship Hiring
As someone who works at a lesser-known and smaller boutique than Susman, I can say at least, for my firm, we're not mostly hiring laterals, and we have no aversion to clerks. I think a lot of the issue is limited manpower and resources. We have one recruiting person who cannot be expected to mail to all the courts, handle law school recruiting, laterals, etc. Frankly, while our partners care about the firm's future and recruiting good talent, they all hate doing administrative stuff, so what ends up happening is the legwork required to get a name out there just isn't done.beepboopbeep wrote:Yea, when I went through this process, I knew full well about SG. Knew it wasn't for me for various reasons (some of the same reasons I didn't apply to, like, QE, even recognizing SG has significant advantages over QE), but definitely not a firm I was unaware of. Had similar awareness of MTO, W&C, etc.
Where I found it hard to get info was on the even smaller boutiques and the specialty boutiques, like the Greines Martins, Molos, Duries, etc. of the world. But I get the sense that a lot of those are recruiting laterals more than clerks anyway.
Smaller firms are also just in the news, are not listed on Vault 100 (due to lack of name recognition), etc.

Anyone know or willing to share the amount of time it took WC to inform them of an offer from the time of interview?

Has anyone heard back from S&C NY, either after sending in an app or after callback?

I was unsurprisingly dinged on the papers for their DC office last week.Anonymous User wrote:Anyone heard anything recently from Munger, Tolles?

Anyone else worried about how the coronavirus may lead to a hiring freeze? I'm starting to notice a slow down

Any movement from QE DC? Interviewed there a little over a month ago and there's been radio silence.

Re: 2019-2020 Post-Clerkship Hiring
Unclear to me if there's an industry-wide slowdown or if it's going to be firm-by-firm. This week, I got a "we're interested but given the uncertainty in the market we need to wait a little bit before making an offer" spiel from a smaller boutique with which I recently interviewed. But on the same day, I was invited to interview with an elite lit shop. Go figure.Anonymous User wrote:Anyone else worried about how the coronavirus may lead to a hiring freeze? Got the same email from a bigger firm this morning. Kinda leaning towards accepting the offer I've got instead of waiting for news that may come months upon months from now...

Similar note today. Some firms are still hiring, I'm sure. But ones that were on the fence seem to be deciding against (at least for now).

I had cbs with firms that are cancelled because of coronavirus...the firms sent their associates home and will be working from home indefinitely. Now I'm wondering if I should apply to more firms at this point knowing that the recruiting people/partners are probably distracted by more important things and working from home or just chill out and wait for a couple of weeks and see if things calm down.

Yes. In fact, I'm getting concerned that offers could be revoked if the economic fallout turns out to be as bad as it looks right now. Since so many industries are affected, every decent size firm will feel it. Were law firm offers to 3Ls and clerks revoked in 2008/2009?Anonymous User wrote:Anyone else worried about how the coronavirus may lead to a hiring freeze? I'm starting to notice a slow down

Was advised by a partner/mentor at a Vault 20 firm to accept my offer sooner rather than later in light of COVID-19's impact on the economy.
Separately, after accepting an offer, did anyone feel compelled to withdraw their applications (via email) from firms who have been silent (i.e., no cbs, etc.)?

I decided to accept an offer sooner rather than ask for an extension (as I otherwise would have) just in case. I did not feel compelled to withdraw other applications. I don't think anyone is getting upset with you if they email you to schedule an interview(??doubtful) and you apologize that you've already accepted another offer, especially under current circumstances.Anonymous User wrote:Was advised by a partner/mentor at a Vault 20 firm to accept my offer sooner rather than later in light of COVID-19's impact on the economy.
