how's the biglaw/boutique market this year for post-district court clerkship located in secondary city (think Miami, Denver, Minneapolis, Seattle)?
Also, how do you take time off to interview out of town while clerking--with the judge's permission?

Does anyone know of any litigation boutiques in the Philly market that look for clerks?

I'm a current clerk and have been really slow to mass-mail, instead trying to target known positions with no luck, but last week I finally got my shit together.
I'm targeting a fairly tight market and trying for boutique and local/regional firms, but I've got an interview tomorrow at a local firm (40 attorneys) and an informational on Wednesday with a smaller firm that represents the exact industry I'd like to be in. The informational interview is a "we're not hiring for the fall right now, but want to tell you about our firm anyway" kind of thing, which feels to me like a "if we really like you, we could make it work" situation. I also had a great conversation with the partner at another 40-attorney firm last week that's getting ready to post a new position.

Thanks for the heads up, but they're a small firm with a primarily transactional practice with some litigation mixed in, and no pending cases in our court (I've had to run my conflicts checks already of course). They appear to have cases at our court every couple years.Anonymous User wrote:Anonymous User wrote: This isn't to discourage you, but as an FYI, one partner at my firm is convinced that doing these "there's no opening, but we'd like to talk to you anyways" things is a great way to stay friendly with the judiciary. S/he brings 3-4 clerks in a year for one of these. None have ever received an offer. I think the idea is that all these clerks will think "gollee they were nice, and free lunch was great, and it's okay that I didn't get an offer because they just don't have an opening."

Just got an interview for tomorrow morning (same poster as above with informational interview, although this is for an actual position). I find it amusing that whenever I get one they ask if I'm available to do it within 24 hours, even though I'll clearly be unavailable to start work until late September.

Ya man I'm pretty fucked. Other than the fact that I was miserable as fuck in biglaw, and I had the time of my life over the last year, I'm starting to regret the decision. But then I remember how miserable I was.Anonymous User wrote:Anyone else also heading to debtor's prison in the fall? This shit is so frustrating.

I know the feeling. I just got a rejection from my only non-informational interview so far.

Those who haven't found something, what are you aiming for? Govt? Other biglaw? Midlaw?

Big/Mid-Law in an admittedly tough market. Would take the right gov't job too, but there's not much hiring here for that right now.

I was trying to change markets, also to a tough market. I'd go to a USAO or back to biglaw. I can go back to the firm I was at, but that would be disappointing because my plan was to use the clerkship as a route to staying in this city permanently.

Admittedly clerking in a desirable COA location but have had a fairly easy process in terms of the job search. Not looking at biglaw, got a handful of lit boutique interviews. This was back in March. Good luck to everyone still looking!

I've only had two of these, but that's one more interview than I've had for an existing position.Anonymous User wrote:If I get 1 more we have no spots, but couldn't not talk to someone w/ your credentials interview, I'm gonna fucking scream. Re: Post-Clerkship Job Hunting (fall 2016 hiring cycle)
Have now had 2 callbacks that I thought went well. Both firms asked for my references...and then proceeded not to call them. Going on 3 weeks with the radio silence....man this shit is so frustrating. I seriously have no confidence in anything I do anymore. Like I can't be screwing up that bad in interviews if they're asking for references right? Or are they just asking for them to be nice? I know how stupid that shit sounds, but fuck, for it to happen twice.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
