Does anyone know how merit scholarships work? I got invited to apply for one that requires an essay. Is that the only type of merit they give, these specific named ones that you have to apply for? Or do they do general merit as well?

It's ok, it's hard to get what most think of as the "philly" experience in West Philadelphia, it has less of that quintessential "philly" thing going on because the "identity" of Philadelphia is mostly defined by the south philly area. Philly as a sandwich kind of town, roast beef, roast pork, cheesesteak, etc.--working man shit--comes from this area. West Philly goes from gentrified-ness (Univ. City) to low/non-investment areas. I mean, across from the law school is a fucking oyster house, this ain't your homegrown roast beef/cheesesteak shop that's been there for half a century. There's also a tavern, not sure what kind of food they're serving up there though. Then, about ten blocks west/north-west, you'll find a ton of halal from the muslim-immigrant population.

Anyway, South Philadelphia is tons of fun if you know where to look. Philly has this kind of paradoxical thing where it's pretty damn small (you can travel from Independence Hall to the extremities of South Philadelphia in ten minutes), but the good hangout spots are relatively hard to find unless your really immersed in the "scene" because everything is pretty nondescript. If you want to have a little fun, you should google "Philadelphia speakeasy scene". As I said, I can't speak too much to the University City area aside from the fact that it's on the up and up, a nice area with a lot of relatively "new" stuff.

Hi everyone:

I was an undergrad at Penn a long time ago and currently a grad student here as well. Welcome! I'll be starting this fall at the law school, and I look forward to meeting you at ASW and orientation in the fall.

Since I'm pretty familiar with Penn and Philadelphia, feel free to ask me about either of these topics and I'll try to give you an answer to the best of my abilities.

Also, I'm a bit older and married, so if you're in a similar situation, PM me. Maybe we can trade notes on being an older/married Penn Law student :)

Just checked out the facebook group and I have to say it, so far the Penn class of 2016 is a really attractive group of people. Can't wait to meet many of you at ASW in a couple months!

I found this awesome website that I thought I would share with all of you. I'm from the Philly area so I'm pretty familiar with the good/bad areas to live but for those of you who aren't, this is an interactive map that lets you draw a shape around a certain area and see all the crime in that area of Philadelphia. I hope some of you find it useful as you start making plans to find housing.

http://www.phlcrimemapper.com

Keep in mind, there's going to be some crime everywhere you look, but it's at least nice to know if someone's been killed in that specific area within the last couple of months. It really gives you a good idea of the high-crime areas, etc. Enjoy!

Got the call from Dean Post.... in as of Monday! Will definitely be attending in the fall. Can't believe I can finally post in here.

Did anyone join the official Penn Law class of 2016 Facebook group on the Admitted Students Website?

Also, I already live in University City (literally a couple blocks from Penn for the past 5 years) so I can help with discussing places to live, eat, drink, etc. The 34th and Chestnut area is truly an amazing neighborhood with a great atmosphere. We're all going to be lucky to call it home for the next three years, trust me!

Domus if you're cool with 2200+/month/person. Radian if you like to hangout with little kids. Old Quaker building if you're interested in a fancier place that's half the price of Domus.

Other than those big places, a lot of the time you can pretty easily find apartments to rent in the Penn/Drexel area for 450-900 per month per person, with single bedroom places being somewhat of a premium and coming in at like $700-750/month at the very cheapest.

If you have a significant other, there are a number of high quality apartment buildings in Center City, like the Drake, which have studios starting around $1100/month.

Most places allow pets, but places like Domus charge usually $30-40 a month for pets, which is nuts if you ask me. If you are able to find an apartment in a house somewhere around campus that allows pets, you may not have to pay anything to have your pet there with you.

Anybody know if there is a family day this spring? Or are we allowed to bring, say, a spouse to ASW?

Has anyone received scholarship info? If so, how long did it take?

Also, why did they have to have their open house on the same day as UVA? First world problems.

They have sent out invites for a few of the scholarships. I don't think anyone has heard anything about those yet. Other general scholarships haven't been announced yet either.

Everyone should come to Penn! I'm not a Penn Law student (yet) but I'm more than happy to answer any questions about Penn in general, Philly, etc.

Thanks for taking questions. How good is the gym on campus? How busy is the gym? Do you have to wait for free weight equipment (bench press, squat rack, benches) in the morning or at night?

3.4x/179/RD. Also a Penn alum, which couldn't have hurt.

The main gym, Pottruck, is really big and quite good as far as I'm concerned. It can get pretty jammed at times. I never really went in the mornings because I was an undergrad with hangovers to sleep off, but I found that night was my favorite time to go. Mid-afternoon right after a lot of day classes end is a pretty bad time. And I honestly have no idea about the free weights, though the entire second floor is pretty much all weights, so I'd guess there are plenty to go around.

Pottruck is pretty awesome. Haven't been in a couple years since undergrad, but they had plenty of benches and a couple squat racks. The free weight area does get super busy in the afternoon/evening like at any typical gym, but was fine at other times. I plan on using it again for Law School, it seems like a pretty cheap deal for grad students.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
