There's an FAQ about the requirements here:
http://www.virginia.edu/provost/vastatus/faq.html

To answer your question: yes, it is worth it for the tuition break and slightly advantaged admissions treatment, BUT you need to work in the state (while doing the normal things like changing voter registration/drivers license to VA) for at least a year before becoming a student or have a working spouse (domiciled in VA) provide more than 50% of your income for more than a year.

Anecdotally, I've heard it's hard to gain residency after enrollment even if you fulfill the spousal requirement.

If you aren't a resident when you enroll, you won't become one absent some strong circumstances

Will we be getting a law school email address - or is it just the abc1ab@virginia.edu email?

You can check if you're eligible by searching for yourself in the UVA directory at the bottom right of the UVA Homepage

Also, the one good piece of advice from the financial aid session during Open House was to set up direct deposit on SIS if you will be receiving loans. You can access that easily from the SIS page once you are logged in.

Think he/she was asking whether you get a @law.virginia.edu email. The answer is no, that's not a thing.

$1000. Dat second deposit.

That's why people only have money for one. They're so expensive. That's rent.

I am loving the HIMYM references, in this thread and the applicant thread. Well played.

What did everyone accept for loans? PM if you want to share but not publicly.

Better way to ask that question: what did everyone budget for COL?

I think this will vary a good amount from person to person. Living with a roommate? Save some money. Living with a working SO? Save more money. Jeffersonian/Ivy vs. Pavilion, personal savings, help from parents, health care expenses, etc. can all infuence total COA by a few thousand dollars.

As a general rule, however, I think it's safe to say that the $16,300.00 that the school estimates is on the very high end. By and large, I'm guessing most students will wind up in the $10,000-$12,000 range, though that's just my best guess.

When do we have to accept our packages by? I haven't looked in awhile... I wanted to get an idea of what utilities would run me before I decide.

No idea but I do know that you can change your aid package 5 times a (semester or year) and have 120 days to return funds (interest free I think too) so it shouldn't be that big of an ordeal.

Awesome news. I just accepted the whole of Stafford unsub direct loans since I wasn't sure how much I would end up needing.

That would be great if we were down to the $12,000 range. I presently live in an area with a COL almost exactly equal to C'ville and I definitely spend more than $12k/yr, but I have yet to figure out exactly which of those expenses might be eliminated in the fall.

UVa 3L here. Have no desire to study for my remaining 2 finals. Feel free to PM me (or ask on this thread) with any questions.

Also, I have a kitchen table (4 chairs + bench), coffee table, and dresser if anyone is interested in purchasing any of those when you move into town (I'll be here until like August 13).

Just make sure you budget in, oh Id say, at least 150-200 extra dollars for the first semester, and make sure you have it for the first couple months

Youll end up paying for
Section dues
tshirts for your section softball team
foxfield
dandelion costume
PILA auction
