I can't imagine it being an issue. The metra doesn't run that often and I think it's less noisy than like, the L tracks. I live decently close to the Metra and have never really noticed it.anonymous812 wrote:Any current students have opinions on Scholar's Corner being so close to Metra? Not a current student, but I live in Scholar's. As Dany said, it's not really an issue. Occasionally if I have a window open the train will drown out dialogue from my Netflix, but it's never been loud enough to bother me when trying to sleep. I'm on the northwest corner, but on one of the higher floors - if you end up with one on 3-5, it could be more of an issue if you have a west-facing room. Ask Linda about the room orientation when you call. Or message me and I can give the lowdown.anonymous812 wrote:Any current students have opinions on Scholar's Corner being so close to Metra? Also, Scholar's is awesome; you won't be disappointed. Stupid name, great building.

It's not, unfortunately. That's a definite downside. The heat is all electric, so it's not a separate heating bill; you just pay more to ComEd. I'm pretty liberal with it and I think the worst it got last winter was $100, which, keep in mind, is electric+heat.StarJammer wrote:I'm considering Scholar's Corner too. Can you please tell me if heat is included in the rent, and if not, whether the bill is ridiculous during winter? Also, what makes it a great building?:)

Are you still taking pictures? If you can please post them. I will definitely consider SC if Regents doesn't have the 1BR apartment I want. I wish I had checked out more buildings while I was there.beepboopbeep wrote:It's not, unfortunately. That's a definite downside. I mostly like it because it's a lot of space for not a lot of money. It's also an older building with a lot of personality that nevertheless is really well-maintained; it falls nicely between places like Regents (that are well-kept but sterile, like a hotel) and the standard Hyde Park walkups that are super old and charming, but kind of falling apart. It feels very homey. The building manager knows everyone and is super nice and talkative; the other tenants are mostly working families.
Though I should say - I think a lot of my fondness for the building is really fondness for my particular apartment. I didn't really like the studios I looked at, and felt the 1BRs were much nicer and a better value. The studios were like 700-800 and the size of my living room; for an extra hundred bucks I got a dining room, bedroom and two more closets.

Crap, totally forgot. I'll take some when I get home from work for sure.ChampagnePapi wrote:Are you still taking pictures? If you can please post them. I will definitely consider SC if Regents doesn't have the 1BR apartment I want. I wish I had checked out more buildings while I was there.

There's also a bedroom but it's disgusting and there are limits to how much I'm willing to embarrass myself on the internet.
