Current students!
With the COA budget, I see that there are no funds set aside for Misc expenses. This leads me to worry that it will be very hard to live within the budget that NYU offers (only enough for tution, housing, books...very little for anything else).
Is this true? Can you live and enjoy life based on the COA (nothing extravagant but enough to do something)? I plan to borrow the total amount available in loans but I want to know that I will be able to live off of that and not need a part time job.

Re: NYU Law Class of 2016
One thing to note is that the COA budget is supposed to cover 9 months, not 12 of living. The room and board budget ($21,720) is $2,400/month which should be plenty for a housing and food/misc. expenses as long as you live reasonably. During the summer, you'll either have a job and/or will have access to the $4,500 PI stipend. Even if you live more frugally and want to make your student loans last the whole 12 months until next August, that's still $1,800/month. Depending on the apartment that I find, I plan on borrowing much less than the COA budget.gertie wrote:Current students!

Re: NYU Law Class of 2016
Just an update on the IILJ front...I really doubt there is going to be another round of invites. There were roughly 25 of us there on Wednesday, and when I spoke to Angelina Fisher, she said that they are hoping for at most 8 people. For example, the class of 2014 only has 2 IILJ scholars. No one I spoke to knew how they narrow down the pool of finalists (Wednesday was full of informal-ish group interviews, so maybe that has to do with it? But honestly it seemed like we were being pitched rather than the other way around). But we should be informed in late March or early April.
As to how much $$$ is involved, Ms Fisher said that the financial aid office determined that, but from what people said it seemed likely to be less than full tuition.

Haha as a TLSer I'd never consider it. But it was weird to get an email about it from the office of admissions (linking to positive "reviews" on the law preview web site!).JamMasterJ wrote:don'tbanjo wrote:DId everyone get the law preview email? Should I be checking the FAAPS financial aid status page for a date update before I expect a decision, or was the 3/8 update for some people just an anomaly?

Re: NYU Law Class of 2016
I'm not sure of the timing, but I received my award Monday early afternoon and my faaps status was updated again on 3/11 (I also had the 3/8 update). Not sure if the 3/11 update was at the same time as the award or before it though, so that may not be useful.02889 wrote:Should I be checking the FAAPS financial aid status page for a date update before I expect a decision, or was the 3/8 update for some people just an anomaly?
ETA: to clarify, on 3/11 there was a "application in final stages" update as well as a "award sent" update.

It's also RIDICULOUSLY easy to get a COA adjustment. I think I got 800 for winter clothes alone, and they may have even helped us with our credit cared bill.Anastasia Dee Dualla wrote:Its pretty easy to make it work.gertie wrote:Current students!

Is a large scholly from Chicago good enough leverage to get money from NYU?

Since it's (slightly) higher ranked, I would say definitely yes.Anonymous4444 wrote:Is a large scholly from Chicago good enough leverage to get money from NYU?

Did anyone appeal their scholarship decision? My appeal has been pending for more than twice the amount of time it took them to make their initial decision. I just want to know...

I didn't think to mention this before, but one reason you may not know is because they might be trying to figure out how much of their offered money is going to be taken first.cwid1391 wrote:Did anyone appeal their (0) scholarship decision? How does one appeal the decision? I've sent an e-mail to the fin aid office but perhaps I need to send it somewhere else??JamMasterJ wrote:I didn't think to mention this before, but one reason you may not know is because they might be trying to figure out how much of their offered money is going to be taken first.cwid1391 wrote:Did anyone appeal their (0) scholarship decision? On the website where your award was listed, there's actually an "appeal" tab. You list your reasons for the appeal and any supporting documents you wish to submit. Then they throw it in a black box somewhere and forget about it.joiedevivre18 wrote:How does one appeal the decision? I thought that tab only appeared after you submitted the appeal? It's not on my faapps page. I just emailed the letter to the fin aid email address. I just did it last night so I haven't received a confirmation or anything.cwid1391 wrote:

The process for appeal is somewhere on that site. I did initially email them, so they may have activated the appeal section for me.ph5354a wrote:I thought that tab only appeared after you submitted the appeal? It's not on my faapps page. Yup, I just received an email from fin. aid with an automated email follow-up saying that I now had the appeal tab and could enter my appeal and supporting documents there.

Been over a month since I sent in Need Access and Fafsa, and I still haven't heard shit about scholly, and their site still has me as "currently under review".
Sent multiple e-mails and called financial aid with one two minute conversation and no e-mail replied to.
Getting really fucking pissed.

Re: NYU Law Class of 2016
I think they only focus on 2012 because that's the most recent complete year to get an accurate picture of your finances. I'd say that's definitely worth an update. I can't remember if you've gotten your fin aid package yet, but I would wait until you do, and then definitely use that as an update/appeal. That, combined with the other offers you have, should make for a pretty compelling appeal letter.digifly wrote:Does it matter for financial aid if my dad recently lost his job and is currently unemployed?
